Episode VII Character Details

Call me old, jaded, cynical or just an OT lover, but I'm struggling with everything that is coming out of the Lucasfilm camp for Ep VII.

Apparently it's 20 years after Ep VI and centers around Han and Leia's kids that are being trained by Luke. The son goes to the Dark Side, bla, bla, bla.

I don't know about you guys, but now that I sit and look back at all six films (even if you don't like the PT's) you can't avoid the fact that it's all about Vader - we don't need anymore on the Skywalkers; they're all old and fat!

I'm ALL FOR new movies but I can't see these working.

The Imperial forces would have still been huge after The Emperor and Vader were killed, surely someone else could pick up the flag? What about doing a Batman and someone else wears the costume and says Vader wasn't in the Death Star? I'm just pulling these out of my a$$, but I can't see this story (Solo kids) being from Lucas's original notes. Abrams said the other day "they will respect the old films but not revere them" - or something to that effect? Does this mean he's neglecting Lucas's notes and doing his own thing?

Anyway, someone today got hold of the Character Breakdown for casting agents, April Webster, Nina Gold & Alyssa Weisberg...

Here are the seven characters, which seems to confirm the Solo kids theme:

Late-teen female, independent, good sense of humour, fit.

Young twenty-something male, witty and smart, fit but not traditionally good looking.

A late twentysomething male, fit, handsome and confident.

Seventy-something male, with strong opinions and tough demeanour. Also doesn’t need to be particularly fit.

A second young female, also late teens, tough, smart and fit.

Forty something male, fit, military type.

Thirtysomething male, intellectual. Apparently doesn’t need to be fit.

The one thing that I have to realize is that SW is and continues to be a cash cow. Disney paid big bucks for that franchise and is gonna be sure to get a return on its investment.

Will I watch the new movies, absolutely. Will they compare to the OT - never. Not in a million years. For someone like myself (and Mandible, apparently) the OT is the best because it is the first, it spawned everything else. It came when everyone said it couldn't be done and a bunch of no-names made it happen. It was proving that with confidence and some ingenuity, anything's possible. It was a revolution in the film industry.

OT SW is the best because of the "O" in OT. It was "Original." Yes, Lucas borrowed from others, but he made his own mark on it, he made it his.

This SW will be Abram's, but won't be at the same time. It won't be original. It won't have beautifully crafted models, it will be heavy on the CG. It will have an enormous budget and make a billion dollars, but it still won't be the success that SW was.

In this era of superhero and action sequels, I highly doubt we will ever see something as successful as SW in our lifetime again.

I am glad to see SW is forever, but I know the best is behind us.

Thing is, when I re-watched the OT about 10 years ago I got bored halfway through the first film. I hated myself for it because I used to love Star Wars.

And as much as I hated the new trilogy and that blasted Jar Jar Binks, my son absolutely loved it. He loved watching Anakin as a little boy and all the things I loathed. And as we watched it together and through the clone wars, we moved back to the orginal trilogy and my love affair with Star Wars was rekindled.

People of a certain age will always love the OT Star Wars no matter what. For our generation, nothing will match those three films. I felt sorry for my son as he has missed out on that shocking moment when Darth Vader reveals he's Lukes father, and when we find out that Leia is Lukes sister. It's hard to not see that coming when you've already seen Anakin become Vader after the birth of his twins.

But the new films will bring in lots of new fans, new characters and expanding universe and, hopefully, some brilliant cinematic pieces. It just means that us old skool SW fans are going to be lamenting 1977 when really, the rest of the world has moved on to the 21st Century.

Here we go...Disney take notes:

The Empire is scattered but not disbanded.
Luke starts training Jedi and reassembling the order. He's training the solo kids with them. One dies. Luke goes crazy and goes to daggobah to reflect. Talks to yoda. Yoda s like "it's the way of th force, let it slide.". Luke refuses and goes back in "the cave". He sees the Emporer huddled in a dark corner. Start talking some evil **** to Luke about bringing th dead back and the darkside. Raises his head and guess who's in the cloak? Luke!

Anyways, Luke starts getting all evil and ****. Yodas like "nooooo!" And Luke's like "get out my head!!!!".

Leia, being worried, had followed Luke to daggobah. She saw what went down. There's some "there's nothing you could have done" stuff. Instead of Leia, luke keeps seeing Vader. He's going crazy. Cue fight.

Han who's back at the ship hears something going down. Runs out to see Luke force choking his sister. "What are you doing!". Luke sabres him without even realizing. Leia screams. Luke falls to his knees sobbing. Leia Comforts Han. Han passes out. Leia stands up. Ignites. Luke looks up. Leaks looks own says "you'll kill us all". "I can't let go. It's my blood. It's my destiny." Leia count dookus Luke's head.

I'm so very excited for this new trilogy but like everyone else I'm also very nervous. But I also think the older the person is who watches the new trilogy the less likely they are to like it. I don't nearly have as much of a problem with the prequels (or even Jar Jar for that matter) that a lot of people seem to have. I don't think the PT is nearly as good as the OT but I don't think they are nearly that bad. This may come down to me being younger than I know a lot of other Star Wars fans are (I was born the year after Return of the Jedi came out). So for me the first brand new Star Wars movie that I got to see in a theater was The Phantom Menace and I absolutely loved it. It was as close to the experience that others had when they saw the original back in '77. I think the new trilogy will probably be experienced the same way by kids who are seeing Episode VII as their first new Star Wars movie they will be seeing in a theater for the first time. And the rest of us who have seen others before it, won't be as impressed because it won't be the same movie that we have all the fond memories of going to see.

As to what the story line is believed to be, it can definitely work if JJ knows how to do it correctly. I know a lot of people bash on Lucas for the PT but I actually hope he is involved in a pretty great deal with the new trilogy. I think the guy can sure come up with a great story, the writing of the script though he's not that great at (although a lot of people don't know that he did help with the Empire Strikes Back script re-write and that was the best SW movie IMO). Also, as a director he doesn't know how to get what he wants out of his actors. Luckily the last two things he won't be a part of at all but if he has a hand in helping come up with the story at all we could have a movie that could be as great as V or VI, especially if the original cast can get into a little bit better shape than they are right now. *fingers crossed for and awesome movie*

Im am fromt he older Generation and been born when the first Movie striked the theaters ! Im super excited to see the new movies. Sure,the magic of the old movies will never get exchanged ! Never.. the PT has some very anyoing parts that I truely hate (Jar Jar, flying R2 ... a very not funny 3po/... a way to nice Anikan.. the super fast turn to be suddenly evil...way to much CGI ..) but overall, I was happy to have new movies and a continuation for the movies I love.

Now the new movies - I KNOW they will be better. Abrams is a full hearted SW fan.. and I believe in this. GL created SW.. but his heart was not there to make the new movies.. we all know that ! I am sure these new movies will get closer to the OT and spark the fans of the OT..

A lot of you guys seem to be unaware of the hugh amount that already exists regarding the fates of the solos and skywalkers after the original trilogy. Plenty of very well written source material exists for disney to perhaps take the franchise in the right direction. For being star wars nut huggers, you should be more open to the expanded universe.

Disney doesn't care about established expanded universe stories. Don't think for a second that they will follow any of that.

Lucas never cared about it either FWIW.

It'll be kind of weird if the new trilogy focuses on Han and Leia's kids and they try and turn the OT into a glorified saga of "How I Met Your Mother."
