So then u become a fan to your fandoms and you end up making excuses and apologizing whenever your favorite director messes up.
Making extreme rationalizations for their failures

Not at all. Some of my favorite filmmakers have made huge mistakes they are apparent...in some cases those mistakes do not make me like the filmmakers or even the films any less. I see the mistake and accept it as a mistake and hope that the filmmaker learns from it...or maybe it is not even a mistake because once again this is all subjective...a statement that someone makes and believes in that I do not agree with does not become a mistake simply based upon my disagreement. That is the beauty of art I guess...you may need apologies and rationalization a for math but I don't think you do with art. Heck I spoke of my disdain for Jurassic World...if, however, what Trevorrow put on the screen was his statement...then it wasn't a mistake it just wasn't for me.

It is not subjective when a movie has plot holes
It is not subjective when they cast the wrong person. Was arnold subjectively bad in barman amd robin?

No, he was terrible by all measures, he was the wrong actor working on a terrible script.

You cant use the " subjective" excuse to defend bad movies or bad acting or crappy scripts.

That right there is literally an example of apologizing and being a slave to the fandom.

Who on earth will ever defend jar jar binks...........
There's no subjective way that jar jar was any good.......... no way.

Im sure there are peoole that love both mr freeze and jar jar, im sure they have fans.
But those people can accept they like something horrible. Is like how i like halloween resurrection even though i know it is a complete failure of a movie.

Since there's a couple JP freaks here, I'll ask this question: when the T-rex exits the pen area, he steps off land... a few minutes later he pushes a car over a very steep man-made concrete drop. What happened to the land?

Note: T-rex steps out between the cars, and the kids are in the first car, so 'no' the rex didn't push the car down the road a bit and then over the side.

That has always bothered me! That was very sloppy for Spielberg. I always felt like he kinda phoned it in for JP (I think he was more invested in Schindler's List at the time) but still managed to get a great movie out of it. That whole T Rex attack is brilliant, but that mistake is quite apparent.

However, I think that pretty glaring mistake illustrates how we are all willing to ignore these kinds of gaffes every once in a while. For some it could be because they were young when they first saw and fell in love with the movie, and simply didn't notice. For others, like myself, they noticed but were willing to let it slide because the movie is a good time. I think many people are forgetting how to simply enjoy a movie, despite some warts, and are being over-critical.

Wrong again..."bad casting" to whom? "Crappy scripts" to whom? And you can find plot holes in Hamlet and Macbeth so...guess the Shakespeare fan boys have just been propping him up because they were so moved by his early classics that he could do no wrong. One of the biggest fanboy groupthink failings is operating under the belief that because one thinks something is "terrible" it is terrible. As for Jar Jar...well I found him to be grating but he was my 7 year old son's gateway into Star Wars...now he is indifferent to Jar Jar but he and I have an amazing time watching Empire Strikes Back together! THANK YOU JAR JAR BINKS...anything that contributed to Father and Son Star Wars bonding time is good in my eyes.

Thats been debunked already.
Theres dozens of youtube vids explaining it.

I agree that taste and personal sensibilities definitely play a role.

You had an advantage that you had the right expectations, and they were delivered. Pre-TFA I would have had expectations that TFA would largely have the sensibilities of the previous films, and follow the progression of what came before. After TFA (because that movie did not flow as a natural progression for me), I didn't have expectations except that I would have been surprised if I would have enjoyed TLJ as much as ROTS, ANH and ESB. So I wasn't exactly disappointed, but I definitely had a knee-jerk reaction that was unpleasant.

OMG... How did I never notice this???? Great, another film ruined! Kidding, I still like it... but wow, that's a big mistake and I really didn't notice it.

Crows, any chance you can send me a link to one of these videos explaining it? I admire your passion, I find it's helpful to me to have specific examples (i.e. - plot holes - if you can mention specifically a few that really bothered you, it may help me to put into words more specific things in TLJ that bothered me...and it gives others the chance to explain how they viewed it). I don't necessarily care about people agreeing with me, but understanding is important to me. I would rather disagree with someone and understand clearly why, than agree without any understanding - just how I'm built I guess. I appreciate any you can share, thank you.

Jai - I appreciate the efforts you make in sharing your views, too. I'm one of those strange people who can have friends I disagree with... which reminds me of someone who told me he didn't think he could be my friend if I didn't agree with him on a variety of issues... I felt bad for him because no one agrees with anyone else on everything... it can make for a very lonely person to limit himself that way.

This is literally why Uwe Boll and carrot top have a career
Because people accept all kinds of mediocrity.....

This is why, this is why vanilla ice was a thing.... because of people's low standards...

OT is full of nonsense we all except.....

The first half of ANH is all nonsense after we see ROTJ

Leia escapes and “happens” to give the DS plans to 2 droids who “happen” to land on a planet where they get bought by the Uncle(half brother) of the son of the Big bad guy... who then “happen” to make their way to another hero who “happens” to live nearby and show up just in time to save the day...

It’s all nonsense....

Yep the low standards of me and my 7 year old son are causing the decline of western civilization...welp in the meantime there are some folks on this thread who genuinely like TLJ and are sharing some insightful thoughts about why they feel this way...there are others who genuinely disliked it but are sincerely interested in learning about why fans who can share so much in common could feel so differently about this film...and then there is you...whatever floats your boat though...

i wasnt talking about your kid i was talking in general.

I wasnt even referring to TLJ itself either, I was talking about fandoms in general. my original reply was about all fandoms and how fans will excuse and defend anything their favorite artist does even if they mess up

Look at Kanye west right now and look at the people defending him
