:goodpost: this deserves a detailed response that I will get to regarding my own feeling about TLJ and why I truly loved it so much as a life long Star Wars fan...I can let you in on this though...and this will make some people crazy...the handling of Luke was one of my favorite things about the film. Luke was always a cool character for me but not necessarily my favorite. TLJ made Luke my new favorite character and his arc really helped the franchise move forward.

Same with me. I love Luke and his arc. Mark was absolutely amazing in TLJ. If it was my choice I think he deserved to be nominate for an Oscar, not to win it, but certainly nominated if they were able to pick more than 5. He certainly would be in the top 10 of 2018 for me. I just really loved his performance. And Luke's story is perfect to be able to continue the Star Wars universe beyond Luke. If you make him the chosen one, then thats it. You can't move past that. There is nothing left to tell. But Luke is not immortal. Something has to come after him.

And to me all the signs of how he was in TLJ were all there in the OT. Even Yoda knew he wasn't the chosen one when you look back. I thought it was really great writing to be able to look back at the OT and see all the signs were there on what he became were in TLJ.

But i know, everyone want Luke jumping off mountains, doing back lips, showing Rey how to use a lightsaber. Luke learned that was not what it meant to be a Jedi. He learned the Jedi were wrong, and that he didn't have it in him to defeat the First Order because him time had passed. Instead he realized his role was to become a Legend, an inspiration, and to teach the next generation that to be a true Jedi you have to be able to balance the dark and the light.

on people who like JW over TFA or TLJ,

people who didn't like TFA their main complaint seem to be that it was too much like ANH, but JW was pretty much the same exact film as JP1. Same film. But with more sexism, a more modern park, and 2 annoying kids that you actually routed for the dinosaurs to eat them. :p

Plus the entire point of JW was completely idiotic. After having gone through the the previous 3 films and seeing the destruction the dinosaurs caused, they decide to build another park in the same exact spot as the first one? Except this time the main bad guy wants to train dinosaurs to be used for the military.:slap

Look if you like JW better than TFA or TLJ that is totally your choice, but seriously I don't want to hear complaints the TFA was just like ANH anymore. :lol

On balance I prefer JW to TFA and TLJ. To give you some context JP and ESB are both in my top 3 films but the Star Wars franchise (1-6 and RO) are much dearer to me than the JP / JW franchise.

And if you can stomach it here's why I like JW more... (spoiler I don't think it is the same movie as JP in the same way that TFA is a repeat of ANH)

Each JP film tackles a similar premise from a different angle (and it has dinosaurs yay).

JP was about 'life finds a way', chaos vs. control.

TLW was a commentary on conservationism and whether a creature that has been entirely manufactured by man has a right to live or if it is simply a product / a commodity to be traded (it is also way darker than many remember and Spielberg's love letter to monster movies).

JP3 was a pile of bantha poodoo (in my opinion) but in many ways it was the TLJ of the series. It looked pretty (the animatronic dinosaurs still hold up today) but it had a poor story and included subversion for subversions sake in a bid to re-invigorate the franchise (T-rex is bested by the Spino and Grant seemingly 'de-evolves' from the character progression earned in JP becoming the biggest dinosaur in the film being two such examples).

Like the ST, JW was a soft reboot of the series but unlike TFA it was not a complete re-tread of all the story beats from the original movie in the series. In JW we were finally able to witness and enjoy a fully operational park (one that had been working for a number of years). Yes we had the park setting and the familiar dynamic of dysfunctional biological family (in both JP and JW the parents of the kids were divorcing) leading to the chaotic creation of surrogate family (Grant, Sattler and the kids and likewise Owen, Claire and the kids) but it was more than this.

JW came with it's own ideas and 'message'. This time it was about consumerism and the short attention span of the current generation always wanting the next new thing and not appreciating what they have already (the older kid spent the first half of the movie looking at his phone or girls and was not interested in the park or his brother). The indomnus rex literally embodied this on screen and it's rampant destruction of everything in front of it (killing for killings sake) is like our own insatiable hunger for the next new thing.

JW, whilst it soft reboots JP is its own beast and was not beholden to the trappings of the original. Many have commented that the battle royale climax of the film between I-rex, T-rex, the raptor pack was too fantastical or superhero like but this was just an extension of the theme of the movie. People don't get excited about watching just a dinosaur movie any more - they want to see more spectacle ... 'more teeth'. Bigger is better and the mosasaur nicely puts the cherry on top of that cake by munching down on the I-rex at the end.

Sure JP is far superior film, more serious with better acting and cinematography, but JW still holds up and it is a good entry (although too much green screen dinos for my liking). It was also stuffed full of good fan service - I was grinning ear to ear whilst watching the movie at all the respectful nods to the fans.

TFA at the cinema was great but hollow experience. By that I mean the hype was incredible and the film was really pretty to watch ... but if you reflect on it and break it down it literally copied ANH beat for beat. That hurts the film and for me it does not hold up on repeat viewings. I don't really want to get too deep into my dislike for TLJ (please see the extinct TLJ thread for that little nugget) but that film deeply diminished any enjoyment I had remaining for TFA.

So you have it, JW is not a perfect film, not even a very good film but for me it is more enjoyable and 'better' than TFA and TLJ - thank you for reading haha.

I always assumed Vader was the chosen one all along despite turning to the dark side since it was he who actually killed the Emperor thus destroying the Sith and restoring balance to the Force.....just not in the way the PT Jedi thought it would play out.

I mean yeah your a JP fan. So i totally think that is cool and your personal tastes. Personally i loved JP, but i wouldn't put it in my top 25 films of all time. Probably wouldn't even make my top 50.

But it sounds like your very invested in that franchise, and thats great!! :) But I am invested in the SW world, and everything it puts out. I love everything about that universe. There really isn't anything I don't like from it. I mean i own the 80s ewok movie and still love it. :)

The only thing i can think of that is SW that i don't like is that trippy Christmas Special. :lol

But I just did not like any of the JPs other than the original and I think i hated JW the most out of all of them. :lol

My comments of the last do or so, I should say are just my personal tastes. By no means do I mean to tell anyone to like TLJ more than JW. That is your personal decision. I don't mind if people hate movies I like, but I do feel like I want to express why I do like them. Some will agree, some won't. If TLJ ruined someones childhood. I am sorry for your loss. But I am a very happy camper with everything they have done so far. Love the new films. Loved RO to death!!! Can't wait for Solo!!! :)

that’s all the movies he’s directed....3.

not including a couple of shorts, tv things.

JW over Looper? dear gawd, why am i even on this site???

I never cared for JW and i just like seeing dinosaurs but the characters were super lame and I was ALWAYS really really angry that we didnt get to see more of the functional park. I was mad that all we got was a couple of seconds of the river track and a couple of seconds of the rides at the park.

But Looper is one of the most idiotic and most plot hole ridden movie ive ever seen. nothing made sense. plot holes were so big you could drive a school bus trough them.

the gimmick of making Joseph Gordon-Levitt into Bruce Willis got old fast and he looked ridiculous. the acting was really bad, the plot was nonsensical. the movie is messy.
The Idea is even a rip off of other movies like 12 monkeys and Predestination, and even minority report and Primer...
what he did is nothing new, he took ideas from all these movies and made an extremely messy movie that relies on a crappy and cheesy premise of seeing Levitt look like Bruce Willis

Again, comes down to personal tastes. I really liked Looper. Levitt/Willis didn't bother me at all. I thought it was an interesting movie, saw it several times, and really enjoyed the story.

Loved 12 Monkeys
never saw Predestination
Loved Minority Report
Hated Primer

again, personal tastes. :)

wow, well i’m glad i’m not you when it comes to movies i like. you couldn’t pay me to see JW again.

I’m glad I’m not you either. You couldn’t pay me to watch those horrible new characters on screen again. No offense .

Lol ummmm what? Jw had a full functioning Park, a hybrid dinosaur, trained raptors. A trex vs hybrid fight, and multiple new dinosaurs. What movie were you watching.

Meanwhile tfa had a girl from a sand world who finds a droid, finds an old man, joins the rebellion and blows up the big ball in the sky. Oop

the fact is Rian is not a great storyteller. Looper is FULL of problems and plot holes, no matter how much you like it, the movie doesnt make sense. it is an irrational movie.
I understand if you like the action and you like the suspense and stuff, but the plot is so incoherent it makes you drunk trying to follow it.

looper might be the most problematic movie ive ever seen. I dont even think Rian understands the laws of his own movie... the time traveling rules.

I can do the same with JW

JP: 2 kids go to a park to see dinosaurs and visit their relative who is running the park.
JW: 2 kids go to a park to see dinosaurs and visit their relative who is running the park.

JP: Dinosaurs get out kill lots of people.
JW: Dinosaurs get out kill lots of people.

JP: The adults then regret they ever built it after they leave the island, T-Rex and the other dinos are left roaming the island.
JW: The adults then regret they ever built it after they leave the island, T-Rex and the other dinos are left roaming the island.

JP: The End.
JW: The End.

The only major difference in the films is that this time the park was opened to the public. Yet despite everything that happened in the pervious 3 films, all the death and destruction the dinosaurs caused, they decide to open up "another" park in the same location as the original? Its pretty funny actually. :lol

But last night you wrote:

Jurassic world is miles better than the new ST it managed to do something new with being nostalgic. It didn’t cater to old school JP fans or try and shove new dinosaurs down our throat. It was completely respectful to the old franchise

but today you wrote:

....A trex vs hybrid fight, and multiple new dinosaurs.

:dunno

But really, in the end, it's all fine crows, you can like JW better than TFA. It really doesn't matter to me. As it shouldn't matter that I like TFA to you either.

Lol hilarious. Except Star Wars is about a growing plethora of characters and plots and having the same **** plots over and over again tends to be boring and contrived. Dinosaurs are pretty much easy and simple. A jungle , eating humans, etc. all dino movies follow this format. It’s just how it’s executed. Star Wars is a huge galaxy with multiple worlds . The possibilities are endless.

Also funny you quote me on that and missed the whole point of the post. I said that the introduced new dinosaurs but still didn’t overshadow or try to replace the old ones. Nice try.

Also I can say the same about the republic letting the empire build a big *** world destroying ball again. How come the empire wasn’t stopped before they did this? Why do it again knowing what happened the last two times? Despite the death and destruction they did it a third time. Really stupid. See what I did there. That’s way dumber than opening a park filled with dinosaurs after a brief fallout.

But hey you can like these movies all you want. I just think they are poor imitations of the past. Different strokes I guess. Don’t wanna derail the thread.

That isn't what you said at all last night. You said the movie didn't cater to old school JP fans. But that is all the movie did. It catered to old school JP fans, so much so that the park was built in the same spot and they even showed old school park sets from JP. There was a lot of references to the original, many scenes played out the same exact way. Same cast of characters. Same exact events happened.

You missed my point: people have been complaining TFA rehashed OT, but to all the JP fans defending JW, JW rehashed many things from JP. They both did.

But I am not a JP die hard fan, so I am not invested in that series like I am with SW. So I am going to love the SW stuff, but i don't really care about the JP stuff.

Plus I never said TFA didn't rehash OT. I know they did, and I loved every second of it. You liked JW, but your denying it was very much the same movie as JP. Your trying to say it was a more original idea and story to its predecessor. But it really wasn't. Its the same.

TFA had a lot of similarities as ANH. I know. I was there. I saw it like 10,000 times. But I enjoyed the similarities. I can get into the reasons, but I highly doubt you want to read a long post about why I liked TFA & TLJ. :lol

i need to add, the worst of all this is that i am stuck in a JP/JW vs. TFA/TLJ debate...dear lord....:lol

No it didn’t cater to old school fans. If it did we’d have a movie on the dangers of creating dead animals and a movie on how science should be careful playing god. Jw was more of a roller coaster ride. Having a new dinosaur just stalk the park and kill. It wasn’t a thriller like the other one. And also jw didn’t rehash anything. They were nods to past movies. The old Jeep, the trex busting the spino skeleton.

The only thing that was extreme fan service was the rex appearing and fighting off the new dino .

Everything else was vastly different. We haven’t seen a working park before, we haven’t seen trained raptors, we haven’t seen a white hybrid killer dinosaur, we haven’t seen a water dinosaur before. So no it wasn’t entirely the same movie. Just like TLJ is not like empire strikes back.
Also they didn’t build the park in the exact spot it was on the same island but it was in a different area. Where else would they build it? That’s where the dinosaurs were. So it makes sense to start from scratch and bury old history. They even reference it was in poor taste to mention the last attempt cause of the deaths.

A lot of the challenge could be that personal taste (as obvious as this is) really is what it all comes down to...its probably futile to try to inject some empirical measure of quality though some may try...I think that Brick, The Brothers Bloom, and Looper are all excellent films...should it surprise anyway following that line of thought that I would like Rian Johnson's fourth film as much as his other three. I love Star Wars as a standalone multimedia enterprise and do not typically compare them to other films because it is unfair. When it comes to other films I don't make my viewing choices based upon actors or even themes it all comes down to filmmakers...I love Scorsese so I am in for anything that he makes...same with a multitude of other great filmmakers. Filmmaking style and talent comes first for me and I will follow a great artist on whatever journey they want to take me on. As a fan of his work I was excited to see Rian Johnson make a Star Wars film and I got exactly what I would have expected from him. I know this is probably painful for a lot of folks to read but wanted to provide a non snarky, combative, or self righteous explanation of one of the reasons that this Star Wars fan LOVED the latest Star Wars movie.

So then u become a fan to your fandoms and you end up making excuses and apologizing whenever your favorite director messes up.
Making extreme rationalizations for their failures
