Promotional materials and trailers have hinted that Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker may be evil in Lucasfilm‘s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. However, a new interview with Hamill in Disney Rewards Insider titled “40 Years of Heroism” clarifies to what extent Dark Side Luke actually exists in the sequel.“In ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ Luke has lost confidence in his ability to make good choices,” said Hamill. “It haunts him to the core. But he hasn’t gone to the dark side. This isn’t an evil version of him. But it’s still an incarnation of the character I never expected. It has pulled me out of my comfort zone. It’s a real challenge.”
So he's an incompetent loser that doesn't know what to do anymore?

Are we all talking about the same thing?

Sounds to me like exactly what I was expecting, so I'm good with it.
To me, this just makes some of the talk from Hamill clearer, I think he walked in expecting to pick up where he left off, probably signed up for the episodes he agreed to before his story was really worked out, and upon seeing the twist he took, he was so consumed by his expectations that his initial reaction was "WTF did you do to me?" and probably a bit of "Can I play this?" Based on what others have said of his performance, I think he was able to finally make peace with it and work with it and I think we'll enjoy the end result.
