Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (TBA)

Saw this on a 15/70 IMAX screen projected in 3D yesterday afternoon with the kids after only ever watching the one single teaser trailer from last April. I don't think I've been that unspoiled heading into a new SW flick since the original in 1977! And what a movie to see cold, WOW!

An indescribable experience and an instant masterpiece IMO. Totally on par with the OT and LOTR. It was everything I hoped for and more and contained nothing that I feared. Bravo Disney, LFL, and Johnson. The thrills, drama, surprises, visuals, music and even comedy were a home runs across the board.

BR 2049 and TLJ make for a one-two cinematic punch not rivaled by many a calendar season.

Did you like it more than rogue one

Hmm, with RO I felt like they catered to my every existing cinematic preference. TLJ was *not* the movie I would have made but it won me over on all levels. Just too many feels. Who knows between RO and TLJ especially with just one viewing of the latter. I'll just say that they're both top shelf and both easily surpassed my personal litmus test of "being better than ROTJ." :)

(he says whilst trying to work out whether there is still good in Khev or if he will have to be offed in his sleep using Jedi Master Luke's special brand of euthanasia for kids who might be suceptable to the dark side)?

:lol

This movie took the Saga sideways on several levels and I can understood people not embracing the choices. That's okay though, I appreciated the risks and loved the end result.

Khev's been drinking the green milk.

Oh wow am I the lone voice in the wilderness on this one? :lol

That's funny because other than ALIEN: Covenant I've pretty much been in agreement with all the naysayers for almost all of 2017's films. Fine then I'll pine for Rose and Porg PF's off in the corner by myself then, lol.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

But Ben and Yoda were never main characters. They were from day one specifically DESIGNED as the "mentor figure." Mentor figures by design almost always DIE. Luke was from day one designed as the HERO.

I would agree. Ben and Yoda were never main characters in the OT, and were from day one with the OT, designed as the mentor figure. They were both main characters in the PT though. Just like in the ST, Luke was from day one likely designed to take over that mentor figure role in the ST. Just as Han did in TFA.

I can see that because even though these are beloved characters for us, they can't be the main cast in every SW trilogy forever. They had their trilogy, while this trilogy is obviously intended to focus on the exploits of a set new characters with the older characters sort of now serving as the side characters that help shape the new characters in the arcs in which they take. That I can understand and accept. I'm sure the same will go for the next trilogy after this trilogy, and so on and so forth.

That being said, I do agree that doesn't mean that they have to be mishandled and just cast aside in a way that merely gets them out of the way, so to speak. However, that's up to the viewer though to decide if they like how the character was handled or not. I still have yet to see the film myself, so I'm anxious to see just how "mishandled" Luke is as what everyone is claiming. As I mentioned, going into it I'm not crazy about the fact that he dies in this film; I personally like the idea that ShadowX81 presented a few posts above where Luke and Rey both take on the FO together, with one final hoorah for Luke, and perhaps Luke dies in Episode IX, or perhaps even not at all. However, even though I don't particularly like it, I wouldn't also necessarily consider the fact that he does die in this film that he was "mishandled". It could fit in terms of the story, but I'll still wish that he could have been around to see one last (actual) duel in Episode IX.

I may very well end up disliking it as some here do, so I'm just kind of playing Devil's advocate here and offering another way of viewing it, so that way I'm not so shocked and easily disappointed because it wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I'm just sort of finding other ways to view the main criticisms of the film of what I've read.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Fair point but I guess it all comes back to the fact that opinions on movies are an individual affair and 10 people hating a movie cannot objectively cancel out any one individual's enjoyment of it. The notion that because these movies did not line up plot point to plot point to some basement dweller's Cheeto induced mental fan movie does not mean that they failed and certainly does not mean that "no one" could "possibly" like them.

Wow....way to lump everyone that hates it into on insulting basket. There have been a vocal few that just like to bash it, but the majority here seem to dislike it and they give explicit and rational reasons for it. Yet to you they are all basement dwelling Cheeto addicts.

... except that Luke was designed as the hero, and Ben and Yoda were designed as mentor characters. Totally different character types.

Maybe I watched a different film....Luke wasn’t the hero, he was teaching Ben (in those bad ass moments)....strike me down .... and see ya around kid and all.

Nor does it mean that the nearly half of viewers who reacted negatively toward this film are all "basement dwellers with a cheeto induced mental fan movie".

Youre right, if you like it then no one can take that away from you. Even if everyone else on earth hated it. But based on what ive seen, I think its fair to say that at the very lease this film is very polarizing. And not all of that criticism can be dismissed.

Khev is pulling the biggest troll move in the history of sideshow freaks. I see through his posts.

These are sequels to the OT, where Luke was the hero. TFA is a sequel to ROTJ.

The problem is that this isn't like say Blade Runner and its sequel. SW is a mythic hero's journey type story, so trying to flip the hero to mentor is problematic (despite ageism that says Luke is older therefore must be relegated to mentor status.)
