Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Even Mark Kermode liked it. He was gushing about it, then at the end of the review admitted that he only started getting into Star Wars with TFA. That could be key, but doesn't explain how he overlooked the acting.

I think if you remove the fact that this has anything to do with Star Wars and just look at this as just another movie, its almost hard to imagine lots of people liking it. Again the big driver for this success is merely the legacy its attached to...like a parasite.

Phantom Menace is better than this. It's not even hyperbole.

All those shots of the goofy alien creatures doing little jokey things for the baby audience was worse than anything in Episode I. There's that moment where that horse thing takes a nasty **** in front of Jar Jar's face or whatever, but not every scene was filled with crap like that. In fact, other than Jar Jar, there aren't even a lot of jokes in comparison.

Phantom Menace didn't have Obi-Wan extracting milk from a ****ing 10 foot phallic creature. Or Qui-Gon spewing "ur momma" jokes to Darth Maul. Every scene there's some kind of stupid Marvelesque quip, Episode I didn't have that. I'll take the thrilling podracing sequence over Finn and the Asian chick riding on goofy *** horse things or whatever that sequence was (like Rogue One, the night sequences were murky and dull as ****). Other than the midichlorian thing, the Phantom Menace never **** on Star Wars as a whole. This movie does. Every piece of dialogue from Luke, Yoda and Kylo Ren is a dig at the lore and franchise as a whole. Then the imagery? Name a shot from the Phantom Menace that's worse than Carrie Fisher blowing up only to survive and fly to safety in space.

Phantom Menace is considered dog **** by people, no denying it, but the Last Jedi is regurgiated dog **** that was eaten by another dog and vomited back out again. It's way worse.

Nobody is looking to have a pity party here, that's being a bit dramatic. Star Wars, for me, died a long time ago. We're all posting our responses to the crap we saw the other night. Don't worry, the criticism will die down and fade away. People on here wanted to know my thoughts on it and I gave it to them raw and in the moment. I'll forget about this **** by next year and fade away just like all the other movies and toy discussions on here.

your presence is much appreciated

That may be the case with a bunch of the positive reviews.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Whoever mentioned it prior, having Leia sacrifice herself in place of Holdo would have been perfect. They could have had just Luke force project himself into her cruiser and said there goodbyes.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Not sure why they felt they needed to show Kylo’s eight pack but they did show Anakin shirtless so I guess..oh brother :slap

That would have actually been really good

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Just gonna throw out my thoughts. As a prequel fan, I can forgive the goofy moments (Luke milking that thing, porgs, etc). The whole casino sequence took me right out of the movie. It wouldn’t have even been that bad, but it just didn’t feel like a Star Wars casino; it felt like an earth casino with a few aliens thrown in. I really enjoyed all the scenes with Rey, Luke, Kylo, and Snoke. And I thought Carries performance was much better than TFA. But whenever it cut to Finn, Rose, Poe, Holdo, I was just waiting to get back to the others. Was incredibly pleased to see my all time favorite character make an appearance in the proper form. I’m actually interested to see where it goes with the younglings. Thought Luke’s force projection scene was badass. Lol Phasma. My absolute favorite scene was definitely Snoke, Kylo and Rey. That whole sequence made the movie for me, although I am bummed that Snoke is gone so soon. Loved the Darth Sidious name drop. Glad to see Luke’s green saber in action again. Leia in space: wtf. Absolutely hated Poe and Hux’s exchange. Again, took me right out of the movie. To quote Star-Lord himself: “something good, something bad, a bit of both.” I look forward to seeing it again.
My current stance:
1: ANH/ROTS
2: TFA/ESB/RO
3: ROTJ/TPM/AOTC/TLJ

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Certainly would have helped to make that whole scene remotely palatable. Only reason it was there was for the ending with the kid.

Yeah and that ending with the kid ... It COULD have been moving. It COULD have worked. The young boy being inspired by the spirit of Skywalker, and seeing in Luke the hero Luke never felt himself to be ... The set up just wasn't there. The kid was only in it because of that pointless bit, as you say, which also dragged in the codebreaker, who had cool stuff to say about the weapons dealers, yeah, and he added to the moral greyness theme, but ... Surely kid, codebreaker speech, and moral greyness could have been squeezed in some other way. If the kid had come out of it a bit more organically maybe I would not have been tempted to roll my eyes at that ending. Maybe my eyes would been cloudy instead because, I dunno, must be dust in the theatre ...

I mean it's kind of amazing that the kid posing with the broom as a lightsaber after playing with his home made Luke Skywalker action figure DIDN'T send a little tear to my eye or a frog to my throat. I'm a cynic, so of course I am secretly hugely sentimental. But yeah. It just wasn't earned. It didn't gel. It felt artificial and unconnected to the rest. God damn. There were some cool scenes in isolation, for sure! The problems arose when they tried to link those scenes with others ...

I'm starting to feel a similar frustration as I felt with the prequels. You start thinking of so many ways they could have taken the same building blocks, characters, and key moments, and made a good movie, but somehow they went with what they went with ... There are things wrong with TLJ that seem like they are so obviously wrong they should have been easy to avoid. There are some great ideas buried in there, but ... And that's what makes it MORE frustrating. 'Just sidestep these obvious pitfalls, guys!' It must be mash up of about five different templates and stories, with fifteen corporate hands reaching in to make sure boxes are checked to boot:

'Add more porgs!'

'You can't do that thing you were building up to! Do this instead!'

'More scenes in space! The folks like the spaceships!'

'What about a space casino as a setting? That was in that earlier draft. Keep that in! I don't care that it makes no sense now we are doing the space chase we made you do because we wanted more spaceships! Do it! And Luke can't leave the island cause that's too many sets! These movies only make a billion dollars, you know.'

'Did you put more porgs in? Triple the porgs you have now! Test audiences love 'em!'

'I just snorted coke and thought, "What if BB8 was a war criminal?" Put that in!'
'But our movie is trying to say that good vs evil is a silly idea, and ...'
'No! Have the cute droid, who is basically a living weapon as a character, and probably sold by your amoral weapon merchants, murder all the people being clearly and cartoonishly evil by threatening to torture people to death, and make it a moment of comic relief! Screw your themes!'

Actually if the Resistance had reluctantly executed some captured Stormtroopers or Resistance deserters just like Phasma wanted to execute Finn and Rose, that could have added a layer to the half-hearted themes ... They hinted at stuff like that in Rogue One. I mean here I am advocating for more war crimes in a family film, but if that's where you wanna take your space adventure, you gotta embrace your message.

Someone mark this date i’m going to praise the PT here for a second.

Pod Racing > Giant Llama jumping

Now which is better:

Maul 3 way fight or TLJ red guards vs the wonder twins?

The Phanom Menace dual by far.

People can **** on the movie as being bad, but they can't that fight.

Qui-Gon meditating while Maul looked on.

Kenobi pumped for the shields to go down and tap into his anger.

Maul getting split.

And the fauking score!

The Phanom Menace dual by far.

I’m going for my 2nd viewing tonight I will be alot less apprehensive now so lets see how this movie holds up.

SW is the only franchise that gives me butterflies in my stomach and turns me into an emotional nervous wreck on day of release lol.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Agreed. I think that last scene could have been a real tear jerker. Really missed opportunity there.

Also agree about the casino. I get it, the universe is BIG but give a single Rodian or Jawa in there somewhere, make a connection! C’mon, it’s like poetry,it should rhyme, right?! ;)

And Cassian did the whole Grey area thing perfect when he killed that informant. That’s how you question the morality of “acts of war”, not just showing a hologram then letting the idea pass completely

Luminous beings are we not this crude DiFabio matter. :lol

CS is weird there is actually a significant difference from B to A and even A to A+!

In other words B is considered bad if i’m not mistaken!

My school grades were PT bad then lol

Lol how Tlj is A is like a symbol away from being a B. There have been worst movies with grades such as F’s lol. Man I miss syskel and Ebert, true cinemaphiles, not just everyone that jumps on the nerd bandwagon and praise films based on their personal tastes

Finn the janitor is a waste of space. He accomplished nothing. Trash.

Poe. Trash.

Little Rey lifted some rocks and beat up the red lobster guards with no training. The dudes that were there to protect Snoke, so they should be the best fighters available, killed by two kids with no skills. Trash.

Phasma can't shoot or fight. Trash.

Luke can't fight, knows nothing, did nothing. Trash.

Chewie is 800 years old and takes orders from a 20 year old girl. Did nothing. Trash.

Snoke...who is he? What does he want? What is his goal ...why Rey? Can see everything? Apparently not. Trash.

The first order. Trash

The rebels. Trash.

BB9. Trash.

R2D2. Wakes up from coma again shows video...goes back to sleep. Trash.

Yoda is the new Pa Kent. Trash.

Well you can’t hold that against CS they are specifically meant for audience collection.

TPM duel in the generator complex. The location, the scenery, the music, it's perfect.

The Rey Rey/Ben/toy guards felt more choreographed and fake than Maul, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan fighting. Those red guards looked like they were dancing.

Their weapons confused me lol

If i’m not mistaken didn’t you once apply this same structure to ANH/ESB. :lol

You truly are the Galactus of cinema deconstruction lol.

Or you are Robin to DiFabio’s Batman.
