Whether or not you agree about QC becoming more of a problem now - - other companies are also having problems (GG anyone?). I think it's a matter of the whole mindset of capitalist China changing drastically over the past few years and there aren't as many options as there have been in the past.

NRD actually makes a lot of business sense, but I do suspect Sideshow is feeling the economic hit just like everyone else to some degree (which may have hastened their decision to actually implement the NRDs). Maybe that also accounts for some of the recent QC issues we've seen, or maybe not. That stuff seems to be hit-or-miss. . .

The NRD may make good business sense for Sideshow, but I still hate it as a consumer/collector, and it has significantly reduced the number pieces I've bought over the past year.

I would think Sideshow makes enough on distributing Hot Toys product alone to keep the doors open, lol. While it may take a little longer for things to sell out with the NRD, pieces still seem to sell out, and that's all that matters. Not every piece is going to go gangbusters and sellout the first few days it's available, especially some 2nd and 3rd tier characters.

2 examples: Silver Surfer and Morgul Lord. These pieces were given hell by a lot of collectors, and it did take a while to sell out, compared to previous releases, but now that they're gone? Morgul Lord Excl. is already on the rise on the secondary market.

Anyone who thinks Sideshow has a financial 'problem' isn't really paying attention. SS is putting out probably 3 times the product they were just a few years back, and the majority of it is still selling out. That's quite a bit of incoming cash. I think SS will be fine.

one huge line, if not now it will be, is the disney line. that alone has the potential to be their biggest line to date imo. and they just picked that up in the last year or so.

I finally got a silver surfer this week

You will. Get it now while it's cheap. It's sick. Screw the exclusive.

You've been warned.

Good work ink. I don't see us getting another SS for a looooooong time, if ever. This is probably it. Get them before they're gone.

I don't think SSC is hurting and the NRD is a good idea, IMO.

NRD is a good idea it prevents skyrocketing edition sizes and overflow of stock. Sideshow's excess stock comes more from their size discrepancies and character choices.

From reading the boards, most customers avoid the 1/5 scale and badly sculpted pieces (Colossus comiquette, Hobgoblin comiquette, Sue Storm comiquette, Darkchilde comiquette). These are the ones that are having trouble selling out post NRD. The better products that are 1/4 scale (Rogue PF, Cyclops PF) have had no trouble selling out post NRD. The same trend will continue, the 1/4 scale statues will sell out and the 1/5 scale ones will start piling up and do badly in the secondary market with the exception of a few. The 1/5 scale X-men line do not even go with each other in a display.

Yeah, I collect Minimates, and their QC is extremely schizophrenic nowadays (when they go bad, they far exceed anything I've seen with Sideshow). This seems to be due, in part, to an increase in Chinese labor demand, the price of oil, etc. Economic stuff outside of these companies' control that I suspect is contributing to issues we're seeing with Sideshow, Mattel, DST, Gentle Giant, etc. etc.

One other thing that helps to put things in perspective though, is that we are still actually paying less than we should for what we are getting from China, irrespective of QC issues across the collectible world. They are artificially manipulating their currency so that it is undervalued vis-a-vis other world currencies. Though that is actually bad for the U.S. export economy as a whole, it is good for those of us who spend a fair amount of our disposable income on Chinese-produced products. If the U.S./Europe ever get their way and force China to allow their currency's value to "float" via broad market factors, then we might really have something to complain about.

.

yeah, usually i always get the ex. versions either nameplates, prints or anything else, but that ex. feature is totally cheezy looking and no one in their right mind would ever display it with the ex. feature imo.

This kind of question has come up in the past - and it's always based on false assumptions. Sideshow is the only collectibles company that has not only survived, but thrived. Every competitor is either gone or in decline.

The deposits is a good thing for collectors as well as Sideshow - it just makes sense. The edition sizes (for those that care about such things) are limited because people aren't ordering just to speculate on secondary market prices. And people aren't just ordering everything and cancelling for the hell of it.

Sideshow has grown their distribution business too - as a hedge against the downturn. They are the only real competition that Diamond has in this market.

I don't think SSC is hurting at all right now.

Damage control^

That said, SS will be fine. Ball is in their court.

I agree that the examples cited aren't any sign of Sideshow hurting, but I do feel like they've got less going on. The newsletters have seemed pretty skimpy lately.

Unfortunately that hasn't been the case - witness Jack Sparrow - still available. The animateds have done even worse.

There must be a market there with Enesco cranking their way overpriced stuff out on a regular basis - but SSC hasn't quite found it yet.

However Marvel is huge for them as is Star Wars (despite the highest license fee in collectibles history) and even GIJoe is doing gangbusters.

I don't think Sideshow is hitting the Disney market right. You can't find their stuff in the parks or on disneystore.com (well the Wolvering PF is on there ironically), so I'm guessing its not in Disney Stores across the country either. Word has to get out about this stuff. Just my opinion with no real evidence to back it up.

it's not SDCC yet :lecture

Granted SDCC is always really big, although last year there wasn't much for me, but in years past I feel that Sideshow had alot of other stuff going on throughout the year.

Thats the one thing with Disney I think that they can do better. You gotta get them listed on the sites of these places or cards to send to these places that they can put out. This will help a ton for Disney.

I think that depends on what you're collecting. I can't say I've had many newsletter were I didn't see something I was interested in at least or that I didn't order.
