...i voted for the droids as well. Not because they were cool but because they represent couple of fools in the movie Hidden Fortress.

This one's a tough one. TOE is correct in that the droids were salvaged by Lucas from the movie "The Hidden Fortress". But, Merry and Pippin came straight from Tolkien's imagination. I'll have to think harder about this one.

Some of Threepio's lines are REAL groaners (displaying Lucas' tone deaf comedic ear)... while R2 never uttered a single bad "beep".

R2 took out 2 super battle droids by himself. I'm sure he could roast a few Hobbits as well.

Well since R2 - D2 is the real hero of the Star Wars saga and has saved the day more often then any of the other SW heros, I ask you. "How can you not vote for the droids?"

I believe we are talking about which is more important/iconic to the story... not who would win in a fight.

Truthfully, the Hobbitts would rather make friends with the robots, rather than kill them. But they have Treebeard and an army of Ents at their command. My vote goes to the hairy-footed tough guys..............
