C'mon folk its gotta be Merry and Pippin. The relief these guys give is phenomenal. Think about the character development in both these hobbits that take place from the fellowship to the ROTK.

If it wasn't for pippin - who would Gandalf vent his frustrations out on, "Fool of a Took" and "next time throw yourself in and rid us all of your stupidity"!! Who knows he could've had a heart attack before the Balrog duel if it wasn't for pip.

As cool as R2 is, he cannot make up for the dead weight that is 3PO. I think that if anything, Merry and R2 would go hang out and leave C-3PO and Pippen to for themselves. C-3PO and Pip would be dead within the hour from exposure to the elements. At least Pippen could muster up some small amount of courage by ROTK.
