That's a great photo. It could pass as a life size figure.

This is about the best 1/6 figure in my small collection. It looks just like a real C3PO and the metal body makes him feel just like a real C3PO.

If you're looking for realism there's no way you can replicate this character with plastic.

SSC is giving it a shot.

Hey All!

Here's a little work-in-progress on 3-po's pistons I thought I'd share. You can see more in my customs thread, but I figured I'd share a pic here, as well. I'm happy the direction its going, but a V.2 is in the works.:)

Even mod free, this is still a great figure.

Cheers,
Ahab

Does your modded piston function, or is it static?

I managed to pick one of these up for a good price a couple days ago. Can't wait to see it in hand.

Yes, they function. I'll be posting some progress/step by step in my customs thread soon.

Fantastic work !

From the proto pics it would appear they failed. :p Not to mention the painted-on ab wiring. There's no way to get around those two glaring problems, IMO. Then compare the faces between the two. No contest.

Yeah, it has the face of a fridge magnet but I still want it because I need a few 3PO's - it's one of the joys of being pretty narrowly focused on SW and Indy (a line which basically has no figures to collect:lol) If I was into other lines such as Marvel, there'd be no way I'd be grabbing this.

I'll be posting some good comp pics next to the Tama when the SSC 3PO arrives.

Looking forward to seeing how it works. It's the only thing that holds the Tama back from indeed being "perfect" (even if I understand they had to do it) and would be interested in a fix.

If Ahab's changes provide a working piston, then it kind of says that Tama didn't actually have to do it the way they did. ;) In addition to the pistons there are also the overly thick sneaker-feet, the "earlobe" rings, the rings around the neck, various parts around the chest, and more. It's an awesome piece, but the word "perfect" is just the name of the line - there are probably as many things "off" with this release to varying degrees, as there are with Sideshow's.

This is the one I want though because I think it will be more fun and easier to modify and weather.

The painted wires on SSC are such copout. If it had wires I'd buy it instead of the Tama.

To be fair, they're molded, not just painted. Definitely much less labor intensive to assemble and keep consistent, which is probably their motivation. Without switching production facilities or at the very least a big revamp to QA, I don't think their current assembly factory could handle individual wires/pieces without a significant amount of rejects/RMAs.

It seems like hand painting the molded wires leaves more room for error than securing actual wires before assembly of the body. :dunno

Let's just say that if anyone is going to be getting the Sideshow 3PO, they'll be thankful (in the end) that it wasn't separate wires. ;) But I expect the figure to turn out really well, SSC is stepping up its game big-time.

You don't own too many SS statues do you? :wink1: :1-1:

*grabs Pix by the lapels* You can't be saying you actually prefer painted wiring to actual discreet wiring, can you??!?!? The trajectory of the hobby is to get more and more realistic for the scale and painted wiring to me seems like a huge step back.

No way, of course not. What I'm saying is that if SSC attempted individual wires, there would be so many QC issues as to make a thousand angels weep. ;) So people getting that figure would be thankful that they don't have to do body swaps with customer service.
