Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

There are moments in LAH that never fail to crack me up. The bad guy's pickup truck that explodes in midair before it even crashes into anything is one of them. :lol

Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

Dunno, but coming out the same Summer as Jurassic Park hurt it. (at least in Ireland they came out around the same time)

Yep, here in the States it got so so reviews and came out one week after JP. "Big mistake." :lol That coupled with the fact that Arnold was billing it as "The big ticket of 1993" for months leading up to its release caused people to not only ignore it in favor of seeing REAL DINOSAURS FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER but to also mock the film for being cocky enough to try and dethrone Spielberg's dinos.

Too bad, they might have miscalculated the film's appeal but it deserved a greater audience. If only it had come out a week BEFORE JP.

Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

I remember that Jurassic Park hype. I did go to see Last Action Hero but honestly all I could think about at the time was that Jurassic Park was playing in the room next door. I had already seen it but wanted to see it again. As you said real Dinosaurs for the first time ever, it was just mindblowing. Never did see JP a second time at the cinema. It wouldn't be till that Christmas that I'd see it again on VHS

Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

I was too young to know about hype or the critical consensus about movies, etc., but. . .I actually liked Last Action Hero more than JP that summer. I remember telling one of my friends at the time that it was a better movie :lol

Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

Funny I was talking to a neighbor just yesterday about the guy who had the target contact from that movie. . .was kind of a disturbing conversation due to my neighbor's wife having a detached retina. :lol Just realizing now that was Tywin Lannister.

Fascinating article about the rise and fall of Last Action Hero: | The Life And Death Of Last Action Hero | Features | Empire

Funny that even the writers were begging the studio to push back LAH's release date because even they were more excited about seeing JP than their own movie. :lol

Yeah, I was SO looking forward to seeing this after T2. Arnold reunited with his Predator director, huge budget, I was pumped. I enjoyed it when it came out but felt that it faltered in not going for broke with the finale. I thought the Ripper was kind of a lame villain, especially as the ONE villain that Charles Dance pulls out of the movies to try and defeat Jack (instead of Dracula, King Kong, etc.) It just seemed like they could have gone unbelievably epic with any villain that the studio owned (especially with LAH's ridiculous budget) and instead they choose...an original completely un-iconic guy in a raincoat? That was where they failed in being an awesome action movie at the same time they were deconstructing it.

The Scream movies did for slasher films what LAH attempted for action movies but Scream was competent enough to actually create it's own iconic villain in the process. LAH did not, so beyond the funny parts doesn't really have that "badass" element that it desperately needed. As far as badass goes it kind of peaked with the Hamlet trailer.

Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

It's funny to see the filmmakers acknowledge how far off the rails Last Action Hero went at times. It's supposed to be a complete deconstruction of Lethal Weapon-esque action movies and so one of the gags features...a cartoon cat? WTF? :lol

Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

Indeed it is, if it came out today, it would be praised for being a satirical throwback.

Because it's so dated, it holds up so well till today.

Probably.

This has a lot to do with the hate. I've never seen LAH in its entirety, but I take it it's supposed to skewer action heroes and action movies? It may have been ahead of its time, too smart for its own good (all of the usual cliches). People weren't ready to peer behind the curtain (oops, there's another cliché). At least I wasn't.

JP's release didn't help either.

Arnie's a clever, shrewd dude. He's been in on the joke from the beginning.
