Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)
The trailer wasn't terrible in that there were several good money shots and the Terminator endo doesn't look as skinny as before, although I still think the original endo was better. I just have not been a fan of digging Arnold out of mouthballs, and forcing the movie to be a retcon. Most of the younger moviegoers probably don't recall or don't relate to Arnold as the 80s action hero he was, so the stunt casting and CGI young Arnold are mostly a service to the original fans. And after all that work of recreating Arnold, you've got a completely different looking Sarah Connor and Kyle Reece, so not sure exactly how this preserves the original. If that's what they were going for then at least cast actors who resemble Hamilton and Biehn. And not sure if this is going to be set in 1984 or 2014. I guess 2014/2015 since T-800 Arnold is now old... except Sarah is in her 20s instead of late 50s, which means.... Arrgh!. WTH?
The story seems like it's going off the rails into alternate reality alternate timeline shift territory. Now Sarah is the badass who already knows what's going on and Kyle is clueless. You've got a different T-1000 instead of Robert Patrick (although not a biggie since the tech is metamorphic), but I'm not sure what the heck John Connor is now supposed to be. Maybe the rebels lost and he gave in to the machines and let them nanotech his body (and what is that now, the 5th actor to play Connor and not one of them looks similar). This movie just seems disjointed in so many respects. I know this is Arnold's iconic role, but I personally think they should have recast the Terminator with a new up-and-comer and went from there. It would have provided more opportunities to explore that world, introduce new threats, etc., rather than shoehorning the script around a one geriatric action hero who no longer has box office pull. I guess we will wait for the reviews and see. I might see it if the reviews and word of mouth are good and there's nothing else to do. It's a popcorn movie.
