You know, I kinda liked the ideal of the high command. I mean, its post D-day and you would think that at least some of the armed forces survived the nuclear fallout and it makes sense that they would be the initial leaders of the resistance since Conner was presumably never in the military...so I thought it made sense. This way we get to see Conner take control of the resistance instead of him just being in that role at the onset of the movie.

Oh, yes. That idea made sense, of course, but what I said was that we didn't really get that feeling of authority out of them and the connection of the overall resistance members wasn't there. They should have slowed things down a bit. Michael Ironside was just ok in this movie, he's given better performances.

Summer movies so far:

Wolverine: Origins - 7/10

Star Trek - 8/10

Terminator Salvation - 9/10

Wolverine is a movie that as the numbness wears off you realize how much of a turd it really was. I'd give T:S a solid 6/10. I enjoyed it, but it could have been much better.

I disagree, critics (of anything) are just stating their OPINION, and no one can dictate what is "correct".

I HATE football, others LOVE it. Who's right?

The only real question is, did YOU see it? What are YOUR thoughts? Only fools let other people tell them what is or isnt good and what they should or shouldnt like. The people on this group have just as much right to say how much they like the movie as much as someone else has the right to say they hated it. But if you really want to start a whine/gripe session, then start a "Terminator Salvation = crap" thread (if thats whats your OPINION)... ;)

no one says you cant express your thought. hate it, love it, just express whatever you damn feel like. i'm not here to stop you, just offering a counterpoint.

taste differs yes, but when it comes to judging films(just like any other art medium), there are such a thing as enlightened/evolved/educated taste. for example, i know ^^^^ about painting. if i say picasso is a lousy artist because his drawings look like chicken feet, would you say my opinion hold merit? the best critics know film history, are well versed in story structure, film language, etc. they are not easily impressed with things that go boom. that's why their opinions have more merit. to me.

There's no hiding from spoilers! I remember before T2 came out, I was at a convenience store and there was the "official movie magazine", not wanting to ruin anything, but wanting to at least see some cool pics, I opened it and immediately flipped to a page with the T-1000 exploding and the caption stating "The T-1000 falls to its death in the steel mill." :horror:crying:horror:crying:horror

:pow

stay away from the hype. make it easier to avoid spoiler. but yeah, they make it harder and harder these days for us to avoid it. trailers can have 10 different variations, showing all the money shots and plot points, even when the movie is just coming out in mere days.

as the result we almost expect it now for every movie. and when cameron holds back any info on avatar, people now ^^^^^ that he doesnt show us anything yet. i'm glad he knows better.

pompous, yes. but search your feeling. you know it to be true.

Just came back. Really enjoyed it, felt a lot of the knitpicking was just that.

I'd say for me its:

Star Trek 10/10
Terminator: Salvation: 8/10
Wolverine Origins: 5/10

I dont know...poor story, bad acting, little character development arent really nit picks. Nothing in the film got my nerd senses wild....the negative ones. But I just felt it wasnt as good as it should've been. The only thing that REALLY works for me is the last 30 minutes. Which were so amazing, and got me pumped out of my mind.

just watched it again. I enjoyed it even more the second time around because I tried to put aside what I already knew didn't work and tried to look for things I missed that did work. A lot of it is very subtle but there are little golden nuggets of depth littered throughout the movie. for instance the first time around I didn't realize the thematic importance of Blair and Marcus and what their relationship did in inspiring John. When he asks her why she helped him she says simply that she saw a human, not a machine. John cuts her loose and then makes his stand against Ashdown and his final radio speech.

The way I saw this was that although John already knew what had to be done, that they could not bomb skynet, Blair helped inspire his words that in turn inspired the rest of the resistance to defy Ashdown's orders. John's words that if they bomb skynet, they will loose the war not only literally or in terms of the time travel paradox, but in an ethical, spiritual sense as well.

There is something 'illogical' about this, its going against Ashdown's pragmatism, just like Blair went completely against logic and, almost impulsively, saved Marcus. That 'irrational' impulse to save another at the risk of one's own life is what the movie tried to put forth as the human condition, the real difference that separates the machines from man. (what's missing here is a development of the way the time travel paradox plays into this)

Although underdeveloped, there were bits of this sort of depth there.

The problem is that we are given (before the last thirty minutes which were fantastic imo) the skeleton to something that could have been really well fleshed out. There was a lot that could have been better, but I was okay with it. Unfortunately I felt like there were too many interesting things brought up and then dropped for sake of explosions and more explosions.

Even action-wise, the introduction could have been done better. I really felt almost nothing when John's entire crew is killed. The suspense built up when wading through the water was ruined, there could have been an interesting 'aliens-esque' encounter there, but it was a missed opportunity.

These are problems, but nonetheless at least we were given the bare-bones of something that could have been really fantastic instead of the bare-bones of something that had no chance of greatness in the first place.

Truly one of the worst part for me about this film was Elfman. The music does so much to put in the human element and emotion during an action sequence and these were the worst I've heard from him imo. The emotional scenes were scored really well and I liked his main theme, but the action sequences felt hollow in large part because of the lack of a riveting score.

Overall, I still think its worthy of an 8/10.

I think it's the best work he's done in a while....

You do no that T2's score is nothing but bangs, and drums right? Sure its great, but theres no theme in most action scenes....just drum drum...hrrrrrrrrm...drum bing drum...

Not that theres anything wrong with that, but atleast Elfman's score sounds good standalone...and atleast he created a theme...unlike Hellboy 2.

Somewhat embarrassing, but, when I did fall asleep at home, after the midnight show, I had a Terminator dream. I remember being in a clean room with lots of parts, fuel cells, etc... Then a black dog came into the room. I am a "dog person", so this was cool, but then both eyes lit up red, Terminator style. All I remember was running out, down a hospital like corridor, not much else. My dog Zack had woken me up to TCOB outside.
