STEEL! Not chrome. Never liked those old chrome styrene models that were nice, but small, 1/9th I think, back in the day. A buddy had one. I liked it, but I met a guy at a con in LA back in 1995, that painted a nice resin cast 1/1 Terminator head, and he had used some kind of graphite paint, and polished and layered it a lot, polished the hell out of it...buffed it a lot, and that thing was SMOKIN' BADA$$! MUCH better than any chrome ones. I feel I have to always dirty up anything that's chromed.
But anyway, I bet a nice wash/wipe of steel and black on the whole thing, and then a light drybrush of steel or silver, just to hit high areas, will make it look metal enough. It actually looks pretty good. It's just too uniform a silver. That's what makes it look plastic. You can push the metal effects using darks and pure metal colors, and they look amazingly more metallic, without all that expensive chroming.
Or not!

I'll know more when the little bugger's on his base, standing in front of me...eyes all aglow....
