Pretty objective article on why The Dark Knight Rises opening weekend likely won't catch the Avengers...and it's from a self-proclaimed Batman fan.

Cliff notes: Parents are more likely to take their kids to Avengers than Batman (bringing more little ones = more tickets), and 3D tickets cost more (even if Batman sold the same exact amount of tickets, the total dollar amount would be less).

*puts serious hat back on*

I think 3D alone = little chance of Batman beating Avengers on nominal terms at least on opening weekend, I do think however, that it will make as much money if not a little more than TDK. I also think TDKR may have a shot at the highest US domestic BO for 2012 even if it may not break the opening weekend record

*throws serious hat away*

Joshcat may be right. :lol

Anyways, while it's cool that Avengers BO is what it is, it's the quality of the movie I care about.

I'm still trying to decide if I will see this in IMAX or do the whole cinema suite thing at my local AMC.

Avengers is in IMAX too though, right?

Yes

Exactly, Avengers is getting both IMAX and 3D boost

TDKR will only get IMAX boost.

Therefore, Avengers boost > TDKR boost, the difference being 3D premiums

Avengers is only getting the IMax though for like the first week or so because AMC rotates those out pretty quickly. Batman will most likely be in the IMAX longer since its shot fully in that and nothing else coming out around it.

Obviously time will tell who's going to be the box office champ. I think Avengers makes the most sense because it's got a built in fan base for every hero vs. just Batman or the Hobbit. The Avengers did have a steep drop off for this week so far. It's under performed what TDK did so it may end up like the Twilight films and just have a heavy front end without the legs that TDK had. TDKR doesn't seem to have the hype that TDK did and it certainly doesn't have the curiousity of a star dying attached to it so it to me has the most fascinating storyline to follow, which is of course wether or not TDK was just lightning striking. The Hobbit is a real wild card which I could see being huge and can also see just falling in line with the Harry Potter's of recent. No matter who the winner is Hollywood should be sucking the dicks of all involved with these three films.

Right, but for the purposes of comparing opening weekends, Avengers has more factors in its favor for a bigger total dollar haul.
