Re: Matt Reeves Batman film

"I'm still working on the script. I'm not going to write and direct anything that I don't think is good enough to be made. I'm definitely going to make sure I have something that is special-there's not enough money in the world to make a mediocre version of Batman worth it."

From the man himself. Not quite sure what else there is to say. He said he wouldn't direct anything that isn't good enough to be made, and here we are. He's not directing. Neither is Matt Reeves. I wonder why...?

Re: Matt Reeves Batman film

That affleck cameo in suicide squad seems kinda embarrassing now.

Specially if this ends up cancelling.

Can you imagine an academy award winning filmmaker like Affleck, who understands effective storytelling and character development watching that 2 hour disco ball of a music video, Suicide Squad? :lol

That was probably the moment he checked out.

Disco ball?

More like a neon stick that fell in a puddle of piss in an alley with walls covered in graffiti.

Re: Matt Reeves Batman film

I just hope and pray that they get there **** together . I don't want to see characters like flash get outshined by the likes of rocket raccoon and freakin Thor . I love both marvel and DC dearly but if justice league and Wonder Woman don't perform well this year. Well kiss this whole thing goodbye.

Soft reboot with teen titans.

Re: Matt Reeves Batman film

No soft reboot, JL will fail critically and commercially, but then Rebirth will reach its conclusion and with Dr. Manhattan (or the empty hand) defeated, the DC Omniverse will be reset and restored with ripple effects that will drive the DCEU into a hard reboot as part of the DCU getting purged of the darkness that afflicted it.

Did you know that Groot sold more merchandise than Batman last year? :lol

Let that sink in for a minute.
Bull-****.

Re: Matt Reeves Batman film

I assume you're joking. What Groot merchandise is there?

No, I'm serious. According to this video I saw, the guy was talking about the DCEU and several other topics related to the box office, future films, merchandise sales...and he talked about Groot, maybe he meant GOTG as a whole, but he mentioned how Groot outsold Batman and that he had seen the numbers, which isn't really a big surprise when you consider Spider Man is the single most popular fictional character of any brand when it comes to merchandise, and Batman is a distant second by about a billion dollar difference. So it's not impossible.

If I find the video, I'll post it. The guy has a youtube channel, but I don't remember the name.

Re: Matt Reeves Batman film

I'm not saying it can't be true, just that it'd be pretty shocking. Walk into any retail store and you're bound to find something Batman related. Groot or even the GotG? Not so much.

Re: Matt Reeves Batman film

I guess I can see Groot outselling Batman merchandise a couple weeks after GotG release, but more as a novelty than any actual profitable quality of the character, I do remember at a time everybody was buying baby Groot in a pot and such, still, I doubt it did anywhere close to Batman numbers.

Spiderman I buy, Groot, not so much.

GotG as a whole doesn't even come close to Batman numbers in comics, or Superman. Now that I think about it, neither does Spiderman atm :lol but Spiderman has a weird profitable quality internationally apparently like a billion or so in merchandise IIRC.

Maybe the numbers were from when the film came out? Or monthly numbers? Who knows. Still, it's shocking to me that Spider-Man merchandise alone sells 1.3 billion and Batman less than 500 mill. :horror

You'd think Avengers would be closer to Spidey, but they're below Batman.

.

Yeah, you can google the Sipdey sales and you'll see the articles, but I haven't seen actual numbers from Groot or GOTG, just what the guy said, so I don't know where he got the "papers" he was talking about.

Re: Matt Reeves Batman film

Yeah, if anything I'm more forgiving of the DCEU *because* I'm a Marvel fan. If Superman was my favorite hero I'd be hella pissed.

It's not that DC fans want these new films to fail--far from it. I've been waiting decades for just Batman and Superman to share the big screen together and never thought I'd see a Justice League film that wasn't animated. However, it shouldn't be too much to ask that the characters and stories are given the respect they're due. WB is ignoring what made Superman great through the decades. There are certain characteristics that must be portrayed by Superman for him to be that hero. Just because you throw a guy in a suit with an "S" on it doesn't mean he's Superman. In addition, WB is bastardizing storylines, rushing to get to their "Avengers Moment", and not taking the time necessary to build their film universe so that people care about the characters and their stories. Everyone has general knowledge of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc. but we don't know these versions of those characters. Marvel absolutely built their film universe correctly, and their continued huge box office and decent-to-great reviews for each film reflect it. Marvel has done their job so well that ****ing Ant-Man, GOTG, and Dr. Strange not only got films made before every DC character not named Superman or Batman, but they made a ton of money.

At this point, I want WB to scrap whatever plans they had for future films. Stop everything for a year, get the right people involved that will plan their DC film future--preferably with Paul Dini in their somewhere, and come back with a plan for films that will do justice to the characters and storylines that people like me love.

Re: Matt Reeves Batman film

Great post General.

Now comes the part where you will be reminded and lectured that box office success does not equate to quality. :lol
