'83 - Scarface..... but some may say ROTJ
'84 Terminator...but also Spinal Tap...and Ghostbusters! :gah:
'85 Back to the Future
'86 Aliens

Has there ever been a summer where at least one classic wasn't born?

Starting with 1977

I'll start the list, pick only one movie per summer.

77 SW
78 Superman
79 Alien
80 ESB
81 Raiders

next 5

82 E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
83 Return of the Jedi
84 The Terminator
85 Back to the Future
86 Top Gun

next 5

We still have:

The Master
Looper
Frankenweenie
Killing Them Softly
The Man with the Iron Fists
Skyfall
Red Dawn
Life of Pi
Anna Karenina
Rise of the Guardians
The Hobbit
Lincoln
Django Unchained
Les Miserables
This is 40

Still lots of good movies to see. To me, it's the Fall/early winter when you usually get the best in terms of Oscar contenders.

Nice list!

84 The Terminator
85 Back to the Future
Two of the best of all times. :rock

To JYE's point, I'm not sure anything from last year will stand up as a "classic" down the road. Some pretty good movies, but as is usual nowadays a lot of derivative stuff and uninspired sequels made up the bulk of notable movies. I enjoyed X-Men First Class quite a bit, surpassing all the other geek movies, but don't think it is gonna be considered a real "classic" down the road.

There really was a lot of great films that came out of the late 70's/80's. So much creativity.

'87 Robocop (Predator)
'88 Die Hard
'89 Batman
'90 Total Recall
'91 Terminator 2: Judgement Day

I had Aliens as my 86 pick too but figured I'd give it to the late Tony Scott instead.

Top Gun was great - damn I saw that movie so many times. That came out summer after my freshman year. Me and my best friend saw that at least half a dozen times in the theater and made plans to go to Miramar (San Diego) when we graduated high school. :lol

Iron Man
Wall E

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
The Clone Wars Movie
Prince Caspian
The Dark Knight
The Incredible Hulk

vs.

The Avengers
Prometheus
Brave
The Amazing Spider-Man
The Dark Knight Rises
The Bourne Legacy

I'm going with with 2012.

From those it's 3 vs 2 for me

I am realizing a scary trend - there are too many Schwarzenegger movies on these lists! I know he has been in some classics - but damn is he a horrible actor!

Next summer is all about Superman for me, but there are still a lot of films to see. Skyfall, Lincoln, Killing them softly, The Master, some popcorn stuff like The Expendables 2, and Dredd. I'll definitely be seeing The Hobbit. Not to mention a bunch of the classics are being re-released. Jaws, Raiders, ET, To Kill a Mockingbird, Frankenstein, and The African Queen to name a few. Not to mention, a bunch of TDKR replays. :lol
