Criterion releasing The Hidden Fortress on March 18, 2014! Finally!

116_DF_box_348x490_original.jpg

A grand-scale adventure as only Akira Kurosawa could make one, The Hidden Fortress stars the inimitable Toshiro Mifune as a general charged with guarding his defeated clan’s princess (a fierce Misa Uehara) as the two smuggle royal treasure across hostile territory. Accompanying them are a pair of bumbling, conniving peasants who may or may not be their friends. This rip-roaring ride is among the director’s most beloved films and was a primary influence on George Lucas’s Star Wars. The Hidden Fortress delivers Kurosawa’s trademark deft blend of wry humor, breathtaking action, and compassionate humanity.

Is that a Tati box set after I dropped all that money buying the UK BDs? :(

That's what they say. Also Red River, Scanner, The Wild Child, A Raisin In The Sun, Breaking The Waves and Picnic At Hanging Rock. And the four beatles could mean A Hard Days Night.

I really like Picnic At Hanging Rock. I might have to pick that up.

And Scanners? I would've never expected that. I hope this means we'll see more Cronenberg titles.

Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Home Entertainment have officially announced and dated the 3D and 2D Blu-ray releases of director Alan Taylor's Thor: The Dark World, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgård, Rene Russo, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Jaimie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings and Tadanobu Asano. The sequel to Marvel's Thor arrives on February 25th.

Synopsis: Marvel's Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor (Hemsworth), the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. Faced with an enemy that even Odin (Hopkins) and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster (Portman) and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

The 2-disc 3D combo pack release will feature 3D and 2D versions of the film on two BD-50 discs, along with a downloadable Digital HD digital copy. The combo pack does not include a DVD copy, however. Likewise, the 1-disc 2D combo pack features a 2D BD-50 and a Digital HD digital copy.

Is 3d still that big of a seller? I'm looking to buy a new HDTV and everywhere I go everyone tells me 3d tv is dead. So why is Hollywood still making them? Most of the films done in 3d look horrible and really are not done properly.

I was wondering the same thing.

I was having this discussion with my friend the other day. I actually don't like 3D at the cinema in most cases, it is used unnecessarily and in many ways spoils the film for me (Gravity being about the only exception). However, 3D at home is much better! I have a 3D tv and it really looks glorious for some strange reason. For instance, I wasn't a massive fan of the ASM in 3D at the cinema, but on my 3D tv it looks superb!

A lot of people I know love it on their tvs at home.
