Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I didn't see this posted yet:

That's definitely something to consider, although it's tough for me to imagine leaving physical media. I've never had much luck with streaming anything. Also what audio formats are supported? That's been a big selling point for blu ray for me, the full 7.1 or Atmos audio track.

That iTunes list seems to differentiate between Dolby Vision and HDR versions, but I'm not 100% sure of the options. If you're a purist you may want to stick with physical media - if you don't mind the prospect of repurchasing the 8K, 16K etc.

Also, I tend to rip or download then stream locally, so bandwidth isn't so much an issue for me.

Every physical item I have ever owned retains some form of value either thru Ebay, a trade or even a gift.

I can't stress enough to my brother when buys all digital videogames and movies for his kids then has nothing to barter with.

Everything that my son has out grown I have traded in for credit, sold or gifted.

You can't do any of that with digital.

I'd normally agree, but the prospect of not having to repurchase each new format is making me lean heavily toward downloads.

Of course the big trouble with digital is the DRM, if the vendor goes belly-up your purchases can be worthless. So DRM removal is mandatory.

So, if my 1080p TV is only a few years old and in no need of replacement anytime soon, am I better off waiting for 8K? What's the time frame until it hits mass market?

Time frame will be clearer come CES 2018 in January but there is a battle going on behind the scenes with some in the consortium wanting 8K releases to be pushed up to 2019 for the States and Europe and 2018 in Asia!!!

I can see it being released in 2019 the technology is already there in place.

It's all about content because some of the 1% of the world already own 8K tv's just to say they have one to go along with their super car collections lol.

Oh yeah definately anything can be translated to 8K.

But it's definately a niche format because movies today aren't even filmed at 4K and are kept at 2K during post production.

Not all but many.

It's a mess lol

I hate it. :lol

Might grab Atomic. It was meh. Enough for a steel. Screw Valerian. And the SB is weird.

Art on Atmoic is cool. Goes with the look of the film.

Valerian steel is just odd. I hope they change it.
I know the film might hae bombed, but that may be due to the subject.
It appeared to be a marvel to look at. Or maybe I just wait for the 8K version

I can't stop playing with the Close Encounters 4K box, I keep pushing the button to light up the aliens lol.

Has to be my favorite bluray box gimmick of all time.
