No! Don't pull a Burton on us! We don't need Bay or Sommers to take over this series. Nolan just needs to take a little break, maybe make another film like the presitge during that time, and then come back recharged.

I had a feeling Heath's death would be a blow to the series, but not that it might end the series. :(

And the thing he, he died early enough that they could have reshot the ending and had Harvey live and thus setting up a villian for Batman 3. The point of Batman taking the blame for Harvey's killings was to prevent a problem. Harvey was Gotham's White Knight and if turned out he was just as bad as the rest, Gotham would have a lot of doubts in the establishment. This could have been a decent story of Batman taking up that trust of Gotham over from Harvey. :dunno

That would have been the best idea. But I can't imagine with all the cool bad guys in the Batman universe that they have to stop making movies just because of Heath.

It's just a smart play on Nolan's part to get a larger paycheck. The more the suits sweat the more money they'll throw at him. He'll be back.

My thoughts exactly, like he's fooling anyone. He's just posturing.

They already have the Villains and Story worked out for "TDKR".

I may be in the minority but I hope Nolan moves on from Batman and does more original work. I want another "Memento" caliber film.

Just one more Batman movie then he can do whatever he wants after. :p

He already is doing an original movie.

I have no doubt that Nolan will be back to helm the third Batman film. But I really doubt he is posturing and attempting to use the tragedy of Heath Ledger's death as a way to position himself for a bigger paycheck. Blame it on the small idealist still left in me.

His original work will be highly anticipated though. Memento and The Prestige were both fantastic.

I think everyone has to remember that "Two-Face" was a fairly novel interpretation in this movie. This particular Two-Face wouldnt work as an ongoing crime lord. TDK was for all intents and purposes a giant metaphore with smaller metaphores mixed into the pot.

The overall metaphore is the inconsistancy and volitility of the individual which causes instability in society. Batman was obviously a metaphore for good exemplifying virtue, honor, morality and justice. Joker was a metaphore for evil exemplifying immorality and injustice. Harvey Dent/Two-Face was a little more complicated and reflected the more real duality that exists in the common man. Harvey was essentially a metaphor for society as a whole showing the scales can easily tip in either direction. Batman (good) and joker (evil) pulling Harvey in different directions was in its most basic of forms the old devil on one shoulder and angel on the other.

I knew that, heh. I was talking the actual physical change. Even in the comics that same way of thinking is present.

batman begins and the dark knight are 2 of my favorite films and chris nolan is by far my favorite director and I honestly feel he is sincere when he is not sure about a third movie. If he cannot come up with a better story than the dark knight than i would not want him to make another. Go out on a high note and because of this i cannot see him making another. I dont think it has anything to do with money i feel he may just want to move on which would be fine by me because he has given us the 2 best movies of the genre period.

I don't know the guy, but saying that Nolan is using his grief as a bargaining chip seems counter to everything I've seen and read about him. If nothing else, he's got class.
And beside, if he has any room to bargain (depending on his contract) they were going to throw bags of money at him regardless.
If BOF's sources are good then I would say he truly is conflicted.

I hate to necrobump a thread, but. . .I decided to rewatch this movie tonight, after the new Hot Toys stuff have been announced. I figure some hardcore Nolanite will know this--what is up with the gas grenade at the beginning of the movie? First time through, I thought it was gonna be laughing gas, like Joker in most of his other incarnations used, but they never really explained what happened there. Anyone know?

He's teasing with the teller's life...

What ever doesn't kill you, simply makes you.... STRANGER.

The smoke grenade goes off, with the teller thinking his head is going to explode. And it doesn't. A sick joke. :lol

I always thought it was a gag grenade myself. When it's pulled from the bus I figured they wanted the audience to think the Bank Manager was going to blow up in a bloody mess, instead a smoke gag comes out. The Bank Manager is spared hence his sigh of relief.

Who knows though. Maybe it is a laughing gas, or something harmful.

Yeah, it was hard for me to gauge the reaction of the manager guy. I thought he was whimpering, as if he knew the gas was bad somehow. But I guess the fact that they never go further with it does suggest it was just a gag.

I'm thinking this is a nod to the laughing gas in other media, though, even if it is just a gag here. Just like the court scene with Dent and the gun that doesn't work seems like a nod to the old telling of the Two-Face origin, where he gets acid tossed in his face.

I actually always assumed it was some sort of poison gas.

But I could definitely see it just being a smoke grenade, just to mess with the manager.

And here I just thought it was your a-typical smoke grenade (though obviously dumbed down to be safe enough for an actor to hold in his mouth). :huh
