Well, I look at it like this if you're not gonna recast mention him at least.

But mention what? Joker went to see his family or something? Joker got tired of the Batman, who is the guy who completes him? Joker is no longer an Agent of Chaos? Either way, mentioning him or not, the story fails. That's how I see it. The Joker would not be absent.

This is what I feel. TDK story ended with Heath's death.

I consider the series to have officially ended when the third ninja in Ras Al Ghul's mountain fortress died in the fire. Everything is just a big "what if?"

What if Bruce escaped and saved Ducard?

What if Ducard was really Ras Al Ghul?

What if Rachel looked like Maggie Ghylenhaal instead of Katie Holmes?

What if other people existed in the series?

etc.

I don't know. It's Nolan's world let the genius figure it out how to not crap on batmans #1 bad guy.

This series ended when Bruce's parents died. And everything that happened in the last 3 movies, happened while Bruce laid there on the ground next too his decomposing family members,

He must have been one ____ed up kid.

And let's not mock my "what if" post. Nolan said that about TDKR himself when describing the context of the story. Also there's a lot of "what if" crap that isn't already established in the previous films. Like all of Alfred's actions for instance, or the convenience of the reemergence of the League of Shadows.

It's not extreme as "WHAT IF UNCLE BEN WAS MURDERED BY SANDMAN ALL ALONG" but it's still one of those convenient things that third films tend to do.

*Return of the Jedi* cough cough *Princess Leia is Luke's sister* cough

Legitimate question since I'm having a brain fart: does Ra's come up in TDK? I know the "house being rebuilt" aspect comes into play with the Bat bunker, but forgot if he gets a mention.

Nolan wanted to make a realistic movie set in Chicago.

I'm glad we had nucler bombs, n' stuff in the next flick. :lol

Not even once.

I thought so. Which is another reason why no Joker just doesn't bother me in TDKR. We know the events that led to the next chapter, giving a shout out doesn't tie the stories together any better.

Would a nod to the Joker have been cool? Sure. But not once during TDKR did I feel disappointed there wasn't one. In fact, it might have just been distracting. I loved seeing Crane as the judge, but it was more than a bit odd, since that seems like a such a prototypical Two-Face role.

Agreed. If this movie was set five minutes after TDK then his absence would have been distracting. But eight years? A lot can happen. He probably got the electric chair sometime between the movies and that was that.

Yeah, I actually thought of that possibility before too. Or what if the SWAT team at the end of TDK shot the Joker dead on sight during the Prewitt building siege. :lol

But, judging by what occurs in TDK, I'd imagine the Joker would be difficult to hold in any sort of prison, let alone an electric chair. He always got out of any given situation it seemed. From escaping MCU cells with dozens of veteran cops to evading Gordon and his men when he creates the hospital scenario. He was just like how he was in the comics.

No prison or asylum or death penalty would stop him. It's made clear that the only person that could slow him down was Batman. "Unstoppable force meets an immovable object".

Plus there's always the Joker's court hearing for all of his crimes. Just think of the character that's established, then think of the scene with the judge and jury. He'd make a mockery out of the court. That would have been gold to see on screen.

"I don't know what happened... we were trying to get him down off the cable, and dropped him by accident." :lol

Plus, there's the whole "no identity" thing. I don't pretend to know anything about the justice system, but wouldn't his acts be considered terrorism? Maybe they'd just toss him in Guantanamo.

Oh man, that would make a great film/story.

Joker: Escape from Guantanamo bay.

I can just imagine the VHS cover for such a film now.

Not only escaped...but worked in the White House!

For me, the story ends here with this beautiful shot,

An unknown future with Batman battling the Joker (we're destined to do this forever) and continuing his war on crime with other freakish rogues. A world that would exist had Ledger not died.

The Dark Knight Rises is a nice "what if" story. What if the Dent conspiracy between Batman and Gordon worked? What if Bruce Wayne decided to retire and become a hermit for 8 years? What if Alfred had actually went to Italy once a year when Bruce was gone 7 years in Batman Begins, looking to see if Wayne was happy? What if Ra's Al Ghul had a daughter? What if the League of Shadows didn't die with Ra's Al Ghul and a terrorist known as Bane and came to destroy Gotham with a sustainable energy orb invested by Wayne? What if a random kid known as John Blake saw Bruce at an orphanage and picked up immediately on the fact that Bruce was Batman?

What if Alfred told Bruce about Rachel's letter? What if he found happiness?

That's how I feel about it.

Nonsense. TDKR happened.
