Re: Batman/Dark Knight 3rd Film

I really don't think it matters. Warner Bros is in the business to make money. If Nolan isn't down with the 3rd film they will find someone else to do it. If Nolan keeps to his word and stops after three, I guarantee that Warner will find another director to do a 4th film. If they feel they need to bring back the Joker in some aspect, they will. In the end it doesn't matter what the fans opinion is.

I think a big part of this depends on whether WB is aware of the backlash that would occur w/ a new Joker...

Admittedly, movies have been screwing w/ my other screen favorites - Alien, Predator, Venom, Vader, Yoda, Terminator...
so they might as well stick Ledger's Joker in there, too. :monkey2

Re: Batman/Dark Knight 3rd Film

I'd much rather have a Zach Snyder take on The Dark Knight Returns with Michael Keaton, to book-end TDK and Snyder's Watchmen, but that's probbaly not going to happen anytime soon.

I doubt there would be a backlash. A tempest in a teacup online, but that's going to happen for every movie ever made anyway.

Re: Batman/Dark Knight 3rd Film

There are so many villains in the Batman universe that it would be silly to go back and try to redo a character that was already done so well. I want Nolan to give us something fresh and new, not microwaved leftovers. If this were a weekly tv series then we would expect the Joker to be a recurring character, but if Nolan does just one more Batman film then I want him to do something new.

Exactly.. the Joker is done. I don't want to see THAT Joker ruined by somebody else. Time to move on to a new villian.

It was one of the most critically acclaimed roles of the last decade, and in less than a year is widely considered one of the most iconic roles and most villainous characters ever put on a screen (also add the fact that, among other things, the role had a big part in the guys death). You cannot underestimate the effect that Heath’s JOKER had not only on the "online community", but on Pop-Culture itself mere months ago. He was every where.

There wouldn’t be a complete "Boycott This Abortion!!" type backlash and it wouldn’t bomb financially if the Joker was recast for the sequel (WB could introduce Dakota Fanning as Robin and it would still make a billion dollars), but there definitely would be negative publicity not only online, but with the general movie going audience as well. Heath has become synonymous with the Joker, just as Hopkins is synonymous with Hannibal Lecture, Sir Alec is synonymous with Obi won Kenobi, Al Pacino with Michael Corleone and Arnold is with the Terminator. To what degree is unknown, but negative criticism would be present to some degree after replacing him so soon after the role that so concretely saturated him into the general populace, eventually factoring into his death.

Should there never be another actor playing the Joker again?? OF COURSE NOT. Just give it some time and wait till Nolan’s vision is finished. Besides Nolan has made his thoughts public and it doesn’t look like he’s going to recast, and at the end of the day his is the only opinion that matters.

Mark Hammil as the Joker in a few years in a Snyder Dark Knight Returns please.

Re: Batman/Dark Knight 3rd Film

Who do you guys think they should cast if they go the Bane route??

I think Javier Bardem would be perfect. He can be intimidating as he showed in No Country, has the Latin influence, has shown he can play intellectual roles and the guy can flat out act as evidence by his AA. If he hit the weights ala Mickey Rourke and put on about 20 to 25 pounds, I think he'd be great. If they really go into detail and show Banes character, not only his strength, but his past, his addiction, his detective skills, his cunning, his intellect and vast drug fortune and empire, it would be a worthy follow up to a villan like the joker. Play up the whole "Super intellectual Drug Addicted Guerilla King pin from down south invading Gotham and corroupting its youth", They could have bane deduce Batmans identity, break his back, etc, with batman eventually overcomming and saving the day, showing Gotham that there is evil in the world much greater than himself.

Sure. I just doubt any of that will inspire a backlash, especially if they get someone like Johnny Depp in the role. It's just a movie; at the end of the day, only deranged people are going to care. There's no such thing as negative publicity and, as you point out, the movie would still make a zillion dollars anyway.

Re: Batman/Dark Knight 3rd Film

I would hate it if they put the Joker in the next movie, it would be very weird to see someone try to portray a character that Heath has made his own imo. Maybe after a few years I would not mind another actor playing the Joker but for now that character must stay with Heath and as enough people have said ther are far too many interesting characters in the Batman universe to put into the third Nolan Batman movie!

That I wouldn't mind seeing... As long as he doesn't have the same "personality" as he did in Charlie & the chocolate factory.

Everything is Internet BS. There still isn't a script, so there are no characters to cast...

Re: Batman/Dark Knight 3rd Film

OOoo...thats a good one.

:rock

He played the Joker for what, more then 10 years now, plus he was Luke Skywalker, he'll have the screen presence.

And that Joker is pretty old so it'd be differant enough from Ledger's IMO, that people wouldnt ^^^^^.

If we get another Joker anytime soon, I hope it goes to Mark.

Re: Batman/Dark Knight 3rd Film

Well, as long as its a different universe, and not the NOLANverse, I agree.

Mark is my second favorite Joker. Imagine him...but darker....I get chills!

After connecting his voice to the animated joker for so long, it would be VERY interesting to see how he transitions that to a live performance....

Over the years, he has prolly developed his own interesting manerisms and quirks (much like Heaths licking of his lower lip) in the sound booth while acting out the jokers lines.

Re: Batman/Dark Knight 3rd Film

You don't need a script to Cast Characters. They can do that right off the completed Story Outline/Treatment. The Major Characters are all there. Of course things could change but I think they have the basic story they want to tell.

I'm sure Chris already has Actors in mind that he'd like to play certain Characters. If he wanted he could meet an Actor privately, pitch the story and Character and cast them right there...

Some Actors commit to Roles with certain Directors before a script is written.

This is more the exception than the rule of course but the point is with a Franchise like this and a known quantity like Chris, it wouldn't be a real stretch for an Actor to commit early.

Yes, but there isn't even a treatment at this point IIRC. Nolan apparently doesn't know which characters will be in the next film yet.
