Every time we hear from Chris Nolan's Director of Photography (aka cinematographer) Wally Pfister, it's very good news. Today is no exception. Pfister went on the Kevin and Josh Movie Show (via RopeofSilicon & NolanFans) and mentioned a couple of juicy tidbits about The Dark Knight Rises, which Nolan is to start shooting sometime after the Oscar ceremony, with Anne Hathaway playing Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) and Tom Hardy playing Bane. Pfister was asked how Chris could top The Dark Knight and he responds with very intriguing thoughts. "I asked the same question," he says. "I read the script 2 weeks ago, and he's done it."
Plain and simple — he's done it. It's a phenomenal script. He's still in the process of cutting it back because it's a very long script right now, but it's really phenomenal. And he actually had me go back and wanted me to watch, in IMAX, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight again. When I watched those I had read the script for The Dark Knight Rises and was like, 'dude, it is a perfect trilogy.' I think that was his intent, to work of those two pictures — and they are very different pictures. And it's funny, we all had different opinions about which picture we like better."
"
Yes, this is just pure hype, plain and simple, but it's damn good stuff. We're less than two years out, and I'm already foaming at the mouth. We've heard a lot from Pfister in the past and he's not one to usually get too excited unless it's really necessary, as this is the guy who shot all of those glorious IMAX scenes in The Dark Knight anyway. Speaking of which, how 'bout some IMAX in The Dark Knight Rises? Like maybe... all of it?
"Our goal is to shoot as much in IMAX as we can. We're going to put in on the screen, and put it on the screen big. And I really encourage everyone to see it in IMAX if they can because we're really going for it this time. In terms of the action, we are all scratching our heads right now trying to figure out how we're going to do it; how we're going to do it in the amount of time we're going to do it in. The opening scene of the movie will blow your mind."
Does anyone else remember their experience going in to see I Am Legend on IMAX back in 2008 and seeing that breathtakingly awesome 12-minute opening prologue for The Dark Knight featuring the Joker robbing one of Gotham's banks? Yea, apparently that's got nuthin' on The Dark Knight Rises. That movie's opening, whatever it is, "will blow [our] mind." Pardon my French - but f*%king awesome! Everyone has extremely high expectations for this and all Pfister is doing is raising the bar even more, so let's hope we can still keep our cool. As for Hathaway's casting, Pfister also mentioned that, of course, "she looked phenomenal in the wardrobe," but I wouldn't expect anything less. As always, we'll keep you updated on The Dark Knight Rises.
