Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Too many villains? Sounds about the same as TDK.

Joker was the main threat in TDK. Two-Face only showed up in the final act, but Harvey got a good amount of screentime. He was the backbone to the story really. The other, non-freak, "normal", bad guys were very minor threats...

For BB, Ras was the main underlying threat. Scarecrow was minor and Falcone even more so. Overall, the focus was more on Bruce Wayne becoming Batman.

For TDKR, Selina Kyle (Catwoman ;)) and Bane have been *officially* announced. We don't know exactly how they will be utilized. I see Bane being the major threat to Bruce/Batman. We heard they were casting a female villain and a love interest. Where does Selina Kyle fall?

The more minor threats could be a new mob boss, the police (they'll really be after him this time), possibly the new DA and/or assistant DA.

We do not know for sure that Ras will return (in a flashback ;)). Remember how that one blonde was supposed to play Harley Quinn? Turns out she was just playing Maroni's mistress and had only a few seconds of screentime...

Talia and the League of Shadows? Sure it's possible. Bane has a history with the league in the comics. Talia could be a villain or (oddly) love interest. The league is a part of Bruce's history in the films and Nolan likes James Bond movies. :monkey5 SPECTRE? :monkey5

I just don't see Ras coming back from the dead... unless it's someone using the name and not actually the character Liam Neeson played. ;)

Anyways, we'll find out by July next year what's bull____ and what's actually true.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

I guess what I'm trying to say, is that we know nothing of the story yet and know nothing on how Nolan will utilize these characters yet. BB had Falcone, Scarecrow/Dr.Crane/Ra's/and that crooked cop. Yes, I know some may not have much screen time as others or not a major character, but nonetheless villains and he made it work.

TDK had Joker, Maroni, Two- Face, Gamble, Scarecrow and that dude who worked for Maroni that hired Joker. Again, I know most were not as major parts than others and screen time for some(Scarecrow/Gamble) was few minutes top. But they all had a purpose and Nolan made it work again. And that's not including other major/minor characters on the Good guy/Reese/crooked cops side of the movie. Actually, that being said. If you only account as Joker as being the main villain and the others don't count, how about the Harvey Dent/Two Face story and the rise of Commissioner Gordon? They both had lots of screen time/development too. But Nolan was able to connect each other to tell his story

Now with this, let's just say Ra's returns in some sort of way, Bane, whatever part Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play and if we count catwoman as a villain, I still feel it's not overload yet. If JGL plays Falcone's son, would you really need to go deep into that character? Catwoman/Selina I understand you will need to spend some sort of time explaining what she's doing there. Bane can go either way.

Bottom line is, Nolan used many important characters in both film. Major or not, they all had an some sort of importance. I really will need a full trailer, leak script or watch the movie itself to make any type of judgement or doubts.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Spider Man 3 had the same problem as Fantastic Four 2 and Xmen 3 and Iron Man 2 - a desire to have a sequel by a certain date despite a lack of a solid script. Add to that studio interference on several of these and you get crappy films.

TDKR has the benefit of a director in control of his project and the time given to properly develop a story.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Yeah Nolan has taken his sweet time with this and i'm confident this is not being rushed, he has come up with a story that he feels can do the trilogy justice (he actually believes it can top TDK, which would be quite a feat).

I don't think one can realistically think Nolan of all people, someone who is so big on character development, will short change the characters in this film by overcrowding it.

We shall see

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Jon Favreau was forced by Marvel to shoehorn a bunch of Avengers stuff into IM2 resulting in an unfocused mess. There have been rumors ever since that his not returning to IM3 is less about money and instead a mutual falling out with Marvel.

Sam Raimi never liked Venom. He talked openly about not liking the character before making SM3. But Marvel wanted the character and pushed. I'd like to blame it the whole movie on Marvel, but I doubt they forced Raimi to make Peter Parker dance and dress like KD Lang.

Tom Rothman, one of the chiefs at 20th Century Fox, once said "there will never be giant robots in any film from my studio". So no Galactus in FF2. No real shots of Sentinels in the Xmen films. 20th Century Fox does not make good films. They might DISTRIBUTE a good film once in a while, but it's been decades since they made a good movie.

I could go on...

Batman Returns was a mess because it was a star vehicle and was more concerned with giving it's a-list cast face time than telling a decent story.

Robocop 2&3 sucked because Frank Miller believes his own hype.

Superman 3 sucked because of Richard Lester (who stole Superman 2 away from Richard Donner). Lester wanted more and more campy comedy. Christopher Reeve would later criticize how Lester had Richard Prior put on a cape and ski down the side of a building. "I didn't find it particularly funny."

Usually when movies misfire there's no mystery to it. It has less to do with a roman numerals and has instead to do with bad decisions or idiots in charge. Usually both. Someone is to blame.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

when people talk about sequels that suck Robocop 2 and 3 are examples of why we fear sequels

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

I dont care for it too much. It's alright. Cool action...but no Clearence = Fail. One of the best villians ever.

'_____es LEAVE. "

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Robocop was watchable but not as good as the first. But I hated that kid. Cain is nowhere near as cool as Clarence Boddiker, but Clarence doesn't become a robot.

I think we can all agree on Robocop 3.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

I didn't like Robocop 2 either, but it wasn't because of Frank Miller. A lot of what he wrote never made it into the film.

From wiki:
Miller's script was labeled "unfilmable" by producers and studio executives. His script was heavily changed through rewrites, and drastically re-written into what became RoboCop 2

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Sounds like it could have been worse... :monkey3

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

I'd like to see a decent Robocop film again. I'm disappointed Darren Aronofsky walked away from the remake.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

With Terminators and Predators thrown in for good measure. And maybe some Avatar Smurfs. And Dinosaurs with rocket launchers and lasers.

Don't forget the Laser Cats :lecture

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

I see where you're going but the debate surrounds poor comic book sequels over populated by villains and/or high profile actors playing them. Robocop 2 and 3 were simply ____.
Think Tim Burton set the trend there of giving too much screen time to the villains. Flash foward a few years and Sam Raimi really lost control of Spiderman 3 and shoe horning the villains in at the expense of coherent and interesting story.
A part of me worries about all these character announcementsfor TDKR too but then, Nolan is a storyteller first and foremost and i'd like to think that each of these characters have a role to play. Time will tell...
