I think it's to lower expectations.
It's just going to be a Batman film (hopefully a good one) but not the second coming. After TDK the fanbase have raised their expectation so high, that whatever will be released will be disappointing. So it's clever in a way to let everyone know in advance what they are getting.

I would say a deliberate move by Nolan/Warners. Clever too.

To avoid reviews which say "not what we were expecting...a massive disappointment"..

It is surprising that they haven't tried to limit exposure more on some of the sets or locations. I suppose though in a day and age when everyone has a camera phone in hand it's nearly impossible. Still it's kinda cool to know a little bit of what's going on in the meantime to formulate a scenario of how the movie will play out...

But it can't top TDK. Because TDK became more than just a film because of Ledgers sad demise? It was The Crow all over again. Don't get me wrong TDK is a great Bat movie, but it's impossible to untangle Ledger from the project to see how successful it would have been had he not died. I mean it was the worlds biggest movie phenomena BEFORE anyone had seen it.

Whereas this is a straight up Bat Flick.

I think Warners marketing dept are well aware of this. Inception took the good grace viewers for TDK. People who would go to see any Nolan movie because of TDK. He has used that up a little as a lot of people were very disappointed with Inception. This has to stand on it's own two feet.
