My Faramir arrived a day early.
My review is basically as follows:
-From the neck down, the figure is amazing. Without a doubt, worthy of joining the ranks of the previous outstanding LOTR 12" figures in that line.
-My only negative from the neck down is with the boots' paint job, specifically the weathering or mud look. It looks sloppy and hastily applied. It's bad, folks. The boot sculpt is actually nice, and that's what makes the bad paint job even more fustrating.
-The headsculpt is well done. It's definitely "Faramir" and well sculpted.
-The hair is indeed missing some of the detailing shown on the prototype pics. It's molded as one solid chunk and it's missing the "holes" (for lack of a better word) that the front locks created in the prototype. Someone had already mentioned that before. Also, the solid color is not only too dark but also a non-existent hair color in real life. It's a cross between semi-dried mud and dog poop.
-The paint application on the headsculpt is probably the
worst that I've seen yet in any Sideshow figure released, period. I thought the production Aragorn paint app was bad. Well, Faramir's is horrendous. Mine is exactly like Wor-Gar's. To say that it's fine is to be in total denial or at the very least, not have high expectations of an SS 12" figure, based on their rather positive track record.
-The beard is so badly painted that I wonder if the factory painter was suffering from bad eyesight.
-I think what makes it even worse is the paint job on the eyes. The whites are sloppily painted and both eyes are outlined with pink, making him look like he's suffering from pink eye.
-The "shiny" paint also makes the entire headsculpt look even worse. Rather cheapy Hasbro-ish.
CONCLUSION:
I agree that from roughly 6 feet away, in my track-lighted hobby room, one cannot pick up the crappy paint job as much and thus, he doesn't look too bad. But my normal viewing distance is roughly at least half of that, and in that case, the terrible paint app looks...er... terrible.
I will DEFINITELY be repainting mine for sure. There's no way I can keep it "stock". Or else I'd be constantly thinking, each time I look at it, as Capt Faramir previously posted: "...oh, if only..."
Here's the best pic I could come up with where he doesn't look too bad, from roughly 20 shots that I took:
