I'll break down my review in 2 parts, but this is just a quickie, will return with a more indepth review later on tonight.

Movie and Technology.

Movie:

Better than AUJ.

But LOTR is still the gold standard.

Technology:

I certainly prefer 24 over 48 but damn if that 48 wasn't the sharpest 3D i've ever seen.

A couple other things worth noting:

1. No Wilhelm scream. Thank God. It really needs to be retired. WAY too many films/filmmakers haven gotten in on the "joke" and its tired.

2. Bard is a badass dad and his kids were badasses. When do kids that have speaking parts in these types of movies ever do a good job? There's pretty much the kids in E.T. and Newt and that's it. Remember the children of all the ILM employees in the SW PT? *shudder*

Obviously that wasn't a totally finished cgi at the time.

No, its actually not that at all. Its called I have a pretty solid knowledge base of the source material and how it relates to the movies. I'm trying to explain to you why you're line of thinking is not correct. As far as Gandalf being slow to realize its The One Ring you can blame that on Tolkien I guess. He isn't any quicker to knowing which ring it is in the books. As a matter of fact how he finds out in the movie is like it is in the books. All anyone knows is Bilbo has a magic ring and until Gandalf reads the scroll and tosses it into the fire (allowing him to see the runes on the ring) its just a magic ring. Its assumed that it was lost in the Anduin and floated out to sea from there. He does not battle Sauron but The White Council does fight the Necromancer (Sauron) to chase him out of Dol Guldur

There is no reason to believe the ring Bilbo found in Gollum's Cave is The One Ring (they don't know what happened to it ie read above). As Gandalf says there are lots of magic rings in Middle-earth and none of them are to be used lightly. Again, this is in line with the book.

It won't. You're going to see the Necromancer defeated in film three and vanish. He will then lay in wait until the event of FOTR occur and he starts to reppear and announce it is Sauron tha

I get what you are saying Josh.... But did they know that the Necromancer was Sauron??? If so then it's good he kept it out of the real books as it makes his reveal in FOTR anticlimactic.

If they did not know then this is the problem have in the film.... Gandalf knows it's Sauron. Then he seems surprised that he is coming back in Fellowship and seems surprised that the ring may be the one ring.. Sure there are many Magic Rings in Middle Earth.... But When Sauron is running around I might think twice about any rings I find.

Again it was in the appendices so it does not really effect the stories. But it does effect the story in the films IMO and makes Gandalf and the rest of middle very naïve.

OK Josh I just read some Wiki..

So apparently it is known that Sauron is running around for some time..

It's in Fellowship that he is finally able to take physical form and have power over Middle earth. During this time Gandalf figures out the ring is the one ring.

this makes a bit more sense I guess. If Sauron is always a slight threat then I guess you would relax at peaceful times. Sauron + One Ring = the real threat to Middle earth.

Only knowing the films (which in some ways is the only way you can watch these since PJ has so much of his own stuff in it) I don't think it's the best way to tell the story. Like I said it sort of makes Saurons return anticlimactic and Gandalf's ignorance about the one ring stand out.

But I can see how in the books it all might flow better.

wow a lot are ripping this to bits and hate it on other forums, they must hate life or something?:lol for me this was like watching Raiders of the lost ark for the first time. a great film.

I wish I enjoyed it that much....

In all actuality I have really only enjoyed one of them the first time viewing like it was Raiders or Star Wars and that was ROTK

I was a tad let down by FOTR with first viewing but LOVED it when I watched on DVD.

Same goes for TTT.... But that one actually has aged very poorly for me. It is by far my least fav.

I really enjoyed AUJ the first time.. More then most I think.

DOS was a bit of a let down for me. I am hoping it has a FOTR effect on me and I love it when I watch it again.

That's what Josh has been telling you all this time. :lol

I said that joke 3 or 4 pages ago... Stop steeling my Jokes ;)

:(

Beorn was one of my favourite characters in the book, I really hope there is more scenes with him in the EE blu...

I really liked it. I know they added a lot to make it three movies and give it that prequel feel, but I was ok with it. Legolas and the female elf made for a great middle earth Spider-man, and Spider-woman. I swear those were like acrobatic assassins!

But LOTR is still the gold standard.

I'll have to see how I feel when this film digests over 2-3 viewings but right now my favorites would be ranked as follows:

1. ROTK EE
2. FOTR TE
3. DOS
4. AUJ EE
5. TTT TE

My wife likes DOS the best. She really got into the Tauriel triangle. :lol

I'm sure my wife will enjoy that same thing. :lol

Here is the thing about the LOTR.

I don't view them as separate movies.

All 3 make one perfect masterpiece. :lecture
