As good as The Hobbit: AUJ was I believe this is where non-book readers will really get into things with Mirkwood, Beorn, Smaug, more stuff with the Necromancer. Its going to get more serious and for some I think more of what people expected with The Lord of the Rings. I will say it will never quite hit that though because the stakes are very different within Middle-earth.

I have a feeling it will not end with the death of Smaug...but it will end will Smaug being pissed off after talking with Bilbo then killing the ponies outside and almost getting Bilbo and Dwarves forcing them to lock themselves in the mountain...then Smaug heads for Laketown to destory it...that's how IMHO it should end...The third should have the awesome Laketown Battle and death of smaug in the beginning and end the film with the Battle of 5 armies...The final scene of the entire trilogy should have Gollum leaving his cave looking for Baggins and Precious and they should show the foundations of Barad-dur being laid...That's how I want it to end...IMHO...They definetely should not bump off Smaug in the second film...no way

From 01/2013.

Pretty dead on.

What trailers were shown during this film?

TWS, ASM 2, Godzilla?

I can't remembr all of them, but Godzilla, Interstellar and Edge of Tomorrow stick out.

Edit - Oh yeah, and ASM 2, which was preceded by a short intro by Emma Stone letting you know the trailer you were about to watch was of Spiderman, this intro illicited much unintended laughter in he theater.

I just love these movies....sure I'd consider hobbit 1 and 2 really good films; maybe not on the same level as LOTR, but then, neither was the book

That said, I could seriously handle more films after the completion of this 2nd trilogy

I really couldn't get into this one and I loves AUJ. I blame the HFR it looked like a sci fi channel production and laketown looked like a stage set. I really hope it doesn't catch on. All 3 of us agreed we should have seen regular 2d. Will watch again on blu ray but right now im pretty 'meh' about it.

My theater showed that to. Really weird of them to put that infront of the trailer.

Lesson here is to stay away from HFR.

I did it out of morbid curiousity.

I will say seeing both of them in HFR last week was a little overkill. I did start to notice things I knew I wouldn't otherwise. I will see TABA in the HFR just to see all of them that way I will say I do prefer 24fps as the way I want to see movies.

Not going to happen unfortunately. Christopher Tolkien went on a rant last year and no longer wants to license out the material. too bad too because there was a lot more stuff from Silmarillion that could have been used.

I wonder if PJ shouldn't have shown
Bard racing to get in position with the Black Arrow
at the end of the movie.

After we saw it my wife was able to correctly guess what is going to happen to Smaug because of it. I think that's something that would have been better for people to anticipate in movie rather than between films.

really loved the movie. smaug was amazing !
I cant belive the movie ends the way it does.
smaug flying to the village and BOOM game over !

WOW ! I cant wait for the next one.

Yeah, I actually feel they let on a little too much what was going to happen.

Also, in the book, was the arrow that big? I can't remember, but I thought it was just a regular arrow.

I don't think it was. I always imagined it to just be a special normal arrow.

Btw. Lets take a moment to appreciate Bard the Bowman.

He is one of Jackson's strenghts over the book. He turned him into a properly fleshed out hero, who puts a sobering take on the hubris and motivations of others around him.

Plus Luke Evans was suprisingly good. It's not a role that showcases great acting sense, but he eminated this kind of honest man charisma.

I believe he named as his special arrow that never missed its mark but otherwise other than the color there was nothing particularly unusual about it.

HUGE potential spoiler for Smaug's fate in the next movie:

I think that PJ just might be sneaky enough to have Bard load that big crossbow thing with the "black arrow," fire it at Smaug, and miss. All hope will appear to be lost until out of desperation he picks up his regular bow and shoots one of his own arrows into Smaug's heart just like the book.
