Ah, so you're the self designated douche bag of this thread...
Every thread has at least one.
Thanks for identifying yourself so quicky, I'll make a note.
:wave

I'm sorry what? Why am I a douche bag? I just don't want you to spoil the movie for yourself because its full on spoilers in this thread. You got that post completely wrong. :slap

Spartan, Njits didn't mean that way. There are some DB's on this board but he isn't one of them. :peace

I'm finding in the modern world, it's very easy to take texts and posts the wrong way. I've done it before myself.

Me in Bold!! :)

I'm sure you're not alone. Beorn's introduction is important as he comes into play in film three. (I figured that he had to come back into play.... Otherwise it was the most pointless character ever.) The spider sequence is important as it shows that Bilbo isn't the same Hobbit that left the Shire (But we saw that at in the first film at the end when he save Thorin So it really does not add much... I argue that it was more important to see that the Ring was having an effect (of course even though it is not supposed to effect Hobbits as much and he had that thing for 60 years so He is one Lucky Hobbit :)) and we get the see the naming of Sting (Fair Enough but wouldn't really count that as something happening.. Plot wise). Both these happen in the book. They get captured by elves in the book the movie way is a little better. The stuff in Thranduil's halls is fantastic. You get the great argument between Thorin and Thranduil. The hate that exists between the two and the greed of both is really well done. ( I don't know if I would call it a "Great" argument and again it was something that I already understood very well from the first film But I will give you that it was at least one small moment in a very long sequence) It also gives us a great character moment between Tauriel and Kili (your definition of great is much different then mine. I like her character very much but I did not care for the Romantic link at all). Despite the hate between the leaders two can try to understand each other. We also get to see Bilbo show off his burglar skills and prove his worth to Thorin/company. (Again this was already established in the first film... Hell he was even a better Burglar because he did not hhave the help of the ring) The barrel sequence has a couple issues but is a little more exciting for most folks than the book sequence

Lake Town introduces us to Bard and what he's all about. He's kind of important to the story. You also get to see the corrupt nature of The Master and how bad Lake Town is. This plays into things in the future. I love most of the stuff in Erebor. Bilbo v Smaug was great. I would have taken some of the action out and put other stuff in earlier in the movie.
(this Basically takes place in the later part of the film which I have no issues with for the most part.)

There are some nice character moments. Kili/Tauriel, (for you not me, I also don't like that it takes away from Elrond saving Frodo in LOTR... Apparently any Elf can do it) Balin/Bilbo, Bilbo/Balin, (can't remember these off the top of my head but I do know that did not feel like Balin and Bilbo were in the movie enough) Bilbo/Smaug. (end of the film and yes that was good) It had more than the book does really at this point. As far as the panoramic shots the areas we visit don't lead to much of that to be honest. I don't think you will find any place in NZ that looks like Mirkwood, Thranduil's halls, Lake Town, and inside of Erebor All of these places had to be done the way they were done.(True but that did not stop them with Interiors of the Wood elves, Rohan, Mines of Moria, Rivendell etc.. Middle Earth just felt more alive and real.)

I thought there was plenty of dialogue.

For me The Main Characters did not get enough

I just think we are coming at this from two totally different perspectives.. You have read the books and have insight to what has happened and what is coming.. You see it as the whole...I could be wrong but I think maybe You can't help but see it as a whole. I know if I had read the story I would feel that way. It is also why I am more then willing to give it the benefit of the doubt that it will improve after the 3rd film.

However, as of now I just see it as the next chapter (Jackson made it this way don't blame me :) ) thus I see just the film (even though I am somewhat familiar with the story)... And in that film I see a movie that gave us very little until Lake town. Like I have said... Take away everything from the end of the film until Lake town and you, up until this point, have missed nothing except for some PJ fan fiction.

As I have said, the EX version and the third film could help get rid of many of these issues but I still feel that PJ should have made this either 2 films or one long 4 hour movie.

As one reviewer said "It’s entertaining, it’s engaging and it’s got thrills, but all at the expense and to the detriment of what stories, narrative and filmmaking should be about."

Forgot to mention the start of Thorin's decent into madness. It's going to make his fall in the next film tragic. More do than the book.

Even the hints of that come at the last 40 min or lake town, which ever comes first, which is when I have said that everything of importance starts to happen.

Josh Let me stress again that I do believe that after the films are done that the problems I have will not be as important. However the story has suffered IMO due to PJ decision to make this a trilogy of films instead of 1 or 2.

If PJ really pulls off a great 3rd part and helps bring more meaning to part 2. I will sing the praises of this series just as I have of the original films. I will Return to this thread and say Right on Josh!! Right On!!

Then I sincerely apologize for my response.
But I put on my big boy pants when I wade into these movie/tv threads, fully aware of potential spoilers and it doesn't effect my enjoyment of the story one way or the other.
So thanks for the warning in hindsight.

I'd imagine it's going to have a similar impact as Boromir's death did, but we've spent more time with Thorin.

Jackson is pretty good at doing Death Scenes and War scenes so the next one should be epic.

I imagine this might be one of the greatest most dramatic moments in any of the Films.
