For all the movies that I saw and loved last year, this one is definitely my favorite. Hell I went to see it alone after work one day 'cause it was playing down the street from my job and was a limited release. Kathryn Bigelow did an amazing job with this movie and Jeremy Renner is awesome, I want to see him in more movies now!

Ha! We posted that at almost the same time (see my post above) :lecture :rock He's amazing in the film. From the very first scene you can tell this guy has that "it" factor.

Definitely has that 'it factor', he kinda reminds me of Nathan Fillion, but with better acting chops. I really liked him in 28 Weeks Later too and he's rumored to be Hawkeye in the Avengers movie! :rock

but he's not in the very first scene ....... :monkey3

.. love this movie.... :rock
I meant HIS very first scene. :monkey3

And I agree, Israel. At first he kinda reminded me of Nathan Fillion in SPR. He'll be much better, though. Or, he at least has the chops. I hope he has a decent agent.

I've heard good things about The Hurt Locker -- though all I know about the plot is from the blurb on the back of the box. So, what's the gist of it? Is it an overtly political movie? Any similar movies that I might've seen so I know what to expect?

I enjoyed Hurt Locker, but I wouldn't put it up in the best of 2009. Had they maintained the level of tension and interest that they generated in the first 30 - 40 minutes, yea, but sadly the last half ended up pretty formulaic. But certainly one of the better war movies we've gotten in the last few years.

And Snake, there's no politics at all. In fact, if I were to pick a similar movie, it would be Hellfighters with John Wayne.

Movie follows an EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) unit in Iraq.

And the movie makes no political statements at all. Bigelow does a great job of staying area from any statements and allows you to form your own opinion.

I think Renner's a good actor but from the movies I've seem him in (S.W.A.T., 28 Weeks Later and said film) he could be in danger of being type-cast as the dangerous, man-on-the-edge type of character.

I knew he was in it, but I haven't seen it. I really like the guy and I hope he gets a ton of pub. from this movie.

I really liked that show The Unusuals he was on. Probably good for him it got canceled since I imagine he will be getting a lot of film offers now.

Finally got to see this film and was pleasantly surprised. Although I thought it dragged for about the last hour, I was most impressed with moments of the film rather than the whole shebang...

The moment on the tiny ridge when he hands Sandberg the juice drink instead of taking it for himself.

The brief minutes we see him back in civilian life.

Taking the bomb device out of the boys stomach.

Etc.

Very well done. I wouldn't put this in my top films of 2009, but it was one of the better ones hands down.

Renner was one of the leads in the quirky, short-lived TV series The Unusuals. He kind of was the mysterious loner in that too, but with a sense of humor.

I think I liked this film so much because it surprised me that it was more a character study than a "war" movie.

You mean that show I mentioned two posts ago.:lol:lol:lol

I thought the part where he goes commando and breaks into that doctor's house, and also when he takes his team into the alleys of the city was a little bit unrealistic. I really don't think that sort of thing happens... much, if at all.

But the rest I thought was really good. I recommended it to a co-worker who spent time in Iraq, and he said he probably wouldn't see it because he had a hard time seeing the opening scene of Iron Man where Tony gets ambushed in the Humvee, so this film would probably be too much. I guess PTSD is a real thing.

So he told me about his experience there, about how stressful it was driving down the streets and how IED's would be hidden in garbage along the road, etc. and it was very interesting how closely his explanation was to what was portrayed in the movie... including the Hadjee selling porno tapes, daisy chained IED's, IED's being unused bombs (many left over from Saddam) and what they looked like and how they were detonated (short wave transmitters), all stuff I had no idea about prior to seeing this film. He also said that he thought the longest sniper record was set during the operation Iraqi Freedom.

This movie did an excellent job at portraying what I think may really take place over there on a daily basis without throwing in a controversial pro/con message/opinion.
