Looks ****ing awesome.

You lie. It looks like a dumb **** summer movie. :D

Wow. Yeah, no thanks. I'm not seeing this movie. At least not in the theaters.

Well, if it's what everyone says, you're going to have to wait another to get a serious version of the character.

You got exactly what you said you wanted. A dumb dash-dash-dash-dash summer movie. Now you're not seeing it in theaters and go on to say it's not a serious version of the character? Which did you want?

You could actually have it both ways. This movie should have felt like "Mask of Zorro" in the mix of drama, action, and humor. That movie could get away with Zorro being a bumbling, selfish character finding his footing because he was the successor to the title of Zorro. I might be in the minority, but I love that movie.

The things I hear about this are exactly as I feared and dont really balance the drama, action, and humor and messes with the Lone Ranger's character a bit too much. Thankfully, I have no love of the character. I only watched the old B&W show on Nick at Night or TV Land as a kid.

I'm going to go to the weird, extraordinary lengths of actually seeing this movie before I declare it awful.

;)

I didn't find the Ranger to be a bumbling idiot... It's more of a city boy out of his element scenario... He's very idealistic about how the world should work and the Wild West all but chews him up and spits him out. By the end of the movie he's got a better grip on how this world works and realizes what he has to do. Yeah, some of the things that happen to him are played for laughs, but I found the humor worked quite well. I saw Mask of Zorro mentioned and that was very much in-line with what I wanted and I personally felt this would make a good double bill with that movie.

:goodpost: I didn't mean to write it off as crap and I shouldn't take the negativity from others as fact. But from previews, it's not what I was hoping to be made. It's exactly as I expected it to be made though if that makes sense.

Interesting. I was going to wait for DVD and probably still will. But I'm more curious to see it now than ever after this positive write up. You also compared it to the original PotC which I always felt was a spiritual successor to "Mask of Zorro."

I had almost no interest in seeing this before. I love the Lone Ranger, but too much about this just came across as wrong. I read Devin's review, and it did not help. I want a serious western with these characters. Not the Lone Ranger and Tonto comedy hr.

Oh, yes, don't get me wrong I wasn't directly replying to you. :)

I've been worried about this from the start, to be honest. After enjoying the first Pirates movie but being bored by the second, I never saw another one. And Depp has had more misses, in my eyes, than hits lately. But I'll give it a go.

I am definitely worried it's going to be as bad as they say, but there have been plenty of movies that critics wrote off and I loved. And then there are movies that even general audiences dislike that I love. So who knows! :D

I loved Mask of Zorro, too, and that was exactly the tone I had in my mind in what I hoped this film would be.

But there ain't not hero in this movie. See, I didn't think the movie would be like....well, that. There's big and dumb, and then there's big and annoying. And if the main character is an idiot the entire movie until the end, then I really don't care.

Mask of Zorro is OK. But I don't remember Bandaris being that much of an oaf through the entire movie. Half, maybe, but he showed courge and the ability to do the right thing....if I remember correctly.

Plus, add to the fact that more then half of the movies that came out this year have disappointed me so much, I almost don't even want to see another movie. So i'm going to pass. If I watch it later on, or for cheap, then that works. Maybe I'll like it. But i'm done taking these chances.

Banderas had his "oafish" moments in the Mask of Zorro, the thing is that he overcame it and became a hero by the end, from the reviews I've read that doesn't seem like the case with Hammer. I was excited for this movie and they are pushing the merchandise hard at Disneyland but the reviews have been just so damning, another bad sign is that while there was Lone Ranger stuff everywhere, including a train car to take pictures with, there were shelves stocked everywhere, no one visibly wearing any of it (including the neat bird on the head wig of Tonto's). I think this is the next John Carter and will just disappear after the first two weeks.

I think this movie is going to suck, heres why.

Johnny depp is now a brand, his Jack sparrow character sold the Pirates movies with his corky pirate character. Bruckhiemer is basicly telling Depp to do the same thing. So this movie is basically going to be just like Pirates, except Depp will be playing a comedic corky Indian.

Not only that, but the action looks way over the top, and just kind of stupid.

I'm sure there will be a sequal. Bruckheimer milks everything he can, so get ready for it, maybe even a trilogy, who knows.

No sequel here if it bombs. I just have a funny feeling it will bomb.

Yeah. He had courage throughout but didn't understand the role Zorro fulfilled and got in over his head several times and escaped death and capture sometimes to comedic effect. But that wasn't an origin story for Zorro. He was the second Zorro. The original was a hero the day he came to be. This is how it should be for the Lone Ranger in my opinion.

If it bombs, it comes out faster to DVD no? :yess:

I'll just post here what I posted on Facebook:
The Lone Ranger is a film that fills me with sadness. I find it to be a decent film, but 90% of it is an overlong explanation of how John Reid goes from being a buffoonish lawyer to who we know as The Lone Ranger. That might be alright if he didn't behave like The Lone Ranger for only 15 minutes of a two and a half hour movie.

I understand that it's an origin story, but, at the end of the day, that's not really an excuse. Batman Begins was an origin story, Man of Steel was an origin story; yet, they had exactly what this film is missing, in spades: balance. They told you the journey, but they didn't sacrifice the character to get there.

Johnny Depp's Tonto character carries almost the entire film, while Hammer's John Reid finds himself. I'd be more forgiving if I knew that we'd get more of the Lone Ranger that we know and love in a sequel, but, when I factor in that there were only 14 people in a massive theater on the opening night of a movie that cost over $250 million to make, I don't foresee that being the case.

Oh, and Silver should be a regal creature; The Lone Ranger's earnest steed, not Mr.Ed.

No, but just short of that. Climbing in tree branches and wearing the Ranger's hat; you'll know it when you see it.

I agree with that. I actually thought it was a decent movie. It just saddens me that The Lone Ranger doesn't really come into his own until the end, and, with the way I see this film performing, that's probably all we're going to get for a long time.

Not really. He stumbles between steps 3 and 5, and doesn't go past number 5 until the end of the film.

Movie was pretty average. I'd say about 30 mins too long and took too long in Reid's getting into being The Lone Ranger.
