Wow, no chatter since December?
Well, I got to see this last night at an advance screening here in Houston and since I haven't seen anyone else pipe up, I thought I'd post a mini-review for those of you that are interested in this...
I little background before I start: As a child of the 80;s I grew up with Legend of the Lone Ranger which, while hokey, will always hold a soft-spot in my heart and was my introduction to the Lone Ranger mythos. Having a fascination with comic books and the old west he was always a good fit for me.
Now for the new movie we get a pretty solid re-telling of his origin but done in a more fun-loving, summer movie sort of way... Let me get straight to it, if you liked the first Pirates, this movie is very much in that vein... Quirky characters, lots of back and forth bantering, scenery chewing villains, and LOTS of humor. Johnny Depp is the dominant character in the movie, but as with certain other elements, there is a reason for that. Don't want to give away too many specifics as I found discovering these things by watching the movie fresh made it that much more enjoyable.
This is very much the Ranger's origin story and as such (even though he is the Ranger for a good chunk of the movie), he doesn't really accept the role completely until towards the final act. It's a very basic story arc but it is effective due to Armie Hammer's potrayal... You really see him kind of learning along the way and when the big set-piece at the end kicks in (accompanied by a piece of music that made me grin like a little kid) he's in full on Lone Ranger mode.
Tonto himself has story arc that I found interesting and gave a little depth to his character along with an explanation as to why he has such "quirks".
That's one of the things I truly enjoyed was the reasoning given to things... We learn WHY Tonto has a dead bird on his head, we learn WHY and WHERE the mask comes from for the Ranger, the silver bullets have a meaning... Little details that helped paint a broader picture.
William Fichtner as Butch Cavendish was pretty awesome in that sleazy, unkempt cowboy way. He actually seemed to be a legitimate threat and though he has a couple of funny lines he does not play it hammy.
All in all I found the movie to be enjoyable in the usual "popcorn flick" sort of way... It's nothing earth shattering, but a fun movie and with the glut of grim, brooding , emo superhero movies lately it's a nice change of pace.
