this is one band i haven't had the opportunity to really sit down and listen to. I downloaded one track off the Octavarium album i believe and i really liked it. There's no denyng their talent and their contributions to the genre. This is a kicks as song (or groupings or songs) btw.

Would you be so kind as to list some of their best or personal favorite tracks so i can give them a listen before i go out and buy the album?

:peace

Sorry, missed this post. Their best albums are probably "Images and" Words", "Awake" and "Metropolis II".

Their most famous song is Pull Me Under which came out around 1992. It was relatively famous then, especially for being almost 10 minutes long. It got recent play as being one of the ending songs on a Guitar Hero game.

Most "progressive metal" fans will cite Awake as their best album. If you like concept albums and Pink Floyd or the Who in addition to metal, try "Metropolis pt II, Scenes from a Memory".

Most people find the singer the biggest obstacle of the band. Past that their musicianship is second to none.

Here's a few more to show their diversity.

Two of my favorite progressive death metal bands. do you like Devin Townsend's Terria?

I don't like the album i love it. It's a multi-dimensional masterpiece. The album's atmosphere is unmatched. It's truly one of his VERY BEST albums. However, i have a very tough time deciding with Devin Townsend "project" i like best. In many ways i prefer his project/band contributions over his SYL efforts, but it's an apples to oranges comparison.

Yeah, Dream Theater is BADLY BADLY BADLY let down by their vocalist... don't get me wrong I love many of their songs, but if they had a great vocalist, they could be untouchable.

this isn't really metal, but I post this because the drummer is bad ass.
