Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

This is the 2nd time I've seen you post this. I've been using the 16gb ipad2 and have never come close to having any problems with it. Could you explain a little bit more what you mean?

Anywho. Just got shipping notification. That's some super slow ass shipping if it's not going to hit my house until next Friday.

I think they come from china. I remember my last few apple orders were like that. There are actual wackos on another forum that track down the flight numbers and everything. All day long is updates on flights.

This article is about the extra amount of data that the new iPad will be pushing but it also explains what he was talking about with taking up more storage space as everything will take up more space due to the display.

The new iPad, with its retina display and 4G LTE connectivity, is about to do wonders for your personal entertainment needs. But that much pretty at those speeds could also decimate your data cap. Why? Because nicer visuals means bigger file sizes. Here's how to limit the damage to your wallet.

So yes, the iPad HD's new 2048x1536 retina display marks the first time a 1080P-capable full-HD screen has been affixed to a tablet, with double the pixel density of the iPad 2 (264ppi vs. 132ppi). But those more detailed images mean larger file sizes, which as you would probably guess count against your data cap more as they zip through the Internet and onto your tablet. As Matthew Panzarino of The Next Web explains:

To give you an idea, we asked Bjango's Marc Edwards about how the new Retina graphics would affect the size of one of its latest apps, Consume. He gave us these statistics regarding the app's packages:

iPhone (Retina and non-Retina), iPad (non-Retina) = 18.3MB
iPhone (Retina and non-Retina), iPad (Retina and non-Retina) = ~35MB

What's that mean? In order for an iPad app to become 'retina ready', it would potentially need to double in file size to include better assets, bigger icons, etc. Mo' pixels, mo' (data) problems. And when those downloads happen over the iPad HD's 4G LTE connection (where everything is fast fast faster), you'll be slurping down more data than ever before.

Mines in process getting ready to ship. Kind of excited to be honest.

I don't really have a lot of apps on the 2. I've got a few games, Netflix, HBO Go, a lot of news readers like flipboard, pulse, etc. I typically keep under 5GB of music and have a few more orginization apps like Dropbox. I don't see myself doing much different with this one with the exception of the new iphoto app. Do you (or anyone else) think with what I've described I'll have a problem with the 16GB wifi model?

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

The biggest thing that eats up the GBs is Video. Not only video you take, the iPad actually takes fantastic video, better than my iPhone and even though you feel stupid holding it, it's worth it but the video people send you. My wife sends me video of the kids when she is with them, the grandparents when they are watching them and you'd be shocked at much space that takes up. Especially once you go the iMovie app and start playing around with them it jumps amazingly.

I actually had to delete stuff from my iPhone to update it to 5.1 OS this morning and I have a 32GB and it's all pictures and videos of my kids, my collection, etc.

Without a doubt I am going 64GB because I'd rather have more space than less and have to get creative like I do with my iPhone.

With the new retina display, new higher res support graphics (like splash screens and other graphics) will have to be included with application bundles. Say a 10 MB application includes a splash screen that is 3 MB in size. After being optimized for retina, that splash screen might be 6 MB in size, bringing the application to a total of 13 MB. That doesn't sound like much, but when you start looking at games and other applications that include many graphics, it adds up real quick.

When you get a chance, could you take a look at my post a page back, about what I have on the ipad2 and tell me what you think about how that translates with this new one?

It's weird for me. I have an iPhone and iPad. Both are 32 gigs. My iPhone is about 80% full. My iPad isn't even at 16. I use them both so differently.

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

Ordered my Ghost Armor to protect the back (I don't use them on the screen). :yess:

It's hard to say. How much free space do you have on the 2 currently?

Here's an article that kind of explains what's going to happen with app size better than I've been: https://thenextweb.com/apple/2012/0...ny-apps-due-to-apples-20mb-3g-download-limit/

It's targeted at developers who are worrying about staying under the 20MB limit to be allowed to download over the cellular network, but it also explains how much of an increase in app size we can expect.

My iPhone is a 16 GB model and I do pretty much what you describe, and I'm just about out of room. So I imagine I would not survive on a 16 GB iPad with retina optimized apps, but your milage may very.

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

Unless they bring out new apps for ipad 3 only they will be just screwing those who have ipad 2. It basically saying hey we are going to waste a bunch of space for graphics that you cant take advantage of. I have a 64gb and its almost maxed out, if they update all the apps to make them bigger I will likely run out of space.

I went with the 32 gb knowing it should be plenty. I've still got 12.6 gb left on my phone I can use. So knowing that I think I should be ok. I am excited to see how easy or harder it is to do my reviews on the iPad.

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

I don't know if I'm worried to be honest. I manage all my stuff constantly between Dropbox and my laptop. Not because I need to just because I have an obsession with organizing. I still use my laptop as my hub and it holds everything unless I want it to be on something and then I just sync them.

I'd suspect you'd be cutting it close, but you could probably trim some fat to make the 16 GB work. The sad thing is, since it's one application for all iPads, 16 GB iPad 2's will fill up as well because of the increase in app size.

Right, I use my MacBook as my main computer as well. So all my movies and reviews are currently on that. I only keep photos and music on my phone most of the time.

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

It's just another strong selling point for their iCloud service.

Tow problems, one is icoud for music will force higher bitrate to download to ipad ( i use option to user lower bitrate when I sync to save space) and no icloud for movies. Mine is used to entertainment while I travel.

What sucks about their iCloud is that it doesn't stream, you have to physically download everything, it just stores it there as a file locale. If my wife wants to watch something I download and it's on the Cloud she has to download it herself it just makes it "free" and accessible is all. Once they add the movies to it, it'll just be a bigger hassle.
