Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I highly doubt the animals or trolls talk to be honest. He's going to keep it in line with the tone, feel, and how things were played out in LOTR.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Read a ____ing book.

:pfft:

You know I have. [Many times]

That doesn't mean I want talking animals on screen. And I definitely don't want animals setting a table.

This should feel like the same universe as LOTR (Like Josh said above). Tolkien didn't even realize that The Hobbit fit into the legendarium that he was creating right away, so it has a lot of inconsistencies with LOTR and Silmarillion. He was initially just writing a story for his kids.

I'm all for a talking dragon though. They have always featured prominently in Tolkien's writing. They are mythical beasts and their voice is a big part of what makes them dragons.

Glaurung is one bad mother.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yeah, Smaug talking is one thing but everything else I just don't think will work at all.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Can one of you fellas tell me if this is going to be just one movie? Or multiple movies like Lord of the Rings? I know the story isn't as elaborate, but if Jackson was spending 2 years+ on the thing, I'm wondering how much he's trying to get out of it.

He's breaking The Hobbit into two parts. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes out this December and part 2 The Hobbit: There and Back Again comes out next December. The movie will include some of the items from the appendices of LOTR (events that happened while Gandalf was away from the action of the main story of The Hobbit).

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Thanks. More is better when it comes to Jackson and this franchise, IMO. :hi5:

Though Bad Taste is also way overdue for a sequel. . . :tap

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yeah, I'm really excited to see how this is split up and mixed all together. Jackson has for me taken how amazing Tolkien did with Middle-Earth and made it better. So I don't mind spending a few more hours movie wise in that realm.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I bet everything talks except the animals at Beorns. (and that's fine)

Well the trolls have to talk. If they don't, how can Gandalf trick them? The trolls will have to talk. But these are not cave trolls. They are mountain trolls. Perhaps they are of higher intelligence than what we saw in LOTR. The certainly look more humanoid as statues in FotR.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yep. The trolls like Smaug will talk. :lecture

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I haven't read the book in a long time. Isn't there an important conversation with the king of the Eagles at some point?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

What about the bird that whispers in Bard's ear how to kill Smaug?

I'm just hoping PJ finds different plot devices for stuff like that.

I can see that being handled just fine. Not much different than Gandalf talking to a moth.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

But, I don't think any of us would have wanted to see the moth whispering in Gandalf's ear. :lol

I'm sure they can come up with a way Gandalf can cause them to be tricked. They might be and they may have some kind of communication but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't talk.

Gandalf does have a convo with the king of the eagles but again I think there are ways to get around this. I mean he talks to that creature in FOTR without much of an issue.

You can always roll with Bard just understand creatures and how they act. They might also go with someone else warns him about the soft spot on Smaug.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Why? There's elves, hobbits, wizards, goblins, giant ____ing spiders, Gollum, orcs, ura-kai, lake monsters, dwarves, trolls, nazguls, talking ghosts, mammoths, temple of doom wannabes, EAGLE cameos, a flaming ______ that sees things when a ring is put on that makes you invisible. If all that works in the LOTR why can't an Eagle (or moth) talk?
