Why? There's elves, hobbits, wizards, goblins, giant ____ing spiders, Gollum, orcs, ura-kai, lake monsters, dwarves, trolls, nazguls, talking ghosts, mammoths, temple of doom wannabes, EAGLE cameos, a flaming ______ that sees things when a ring is put on that makes you invisible. Why can't an Eagle (or moth) talk?

Seriously.

Let that ____ talk. I never took LOTR as a gritty, realistic looking fantasy realm.

Because very few things outside of the human characters talked in the movies and about the same in the books (The Lord of the Rings). I'm pretty sure at one point Jackson said that he would keep most of that the same in The Hobbit. Now, that was before production started and of course things could have changed. If any creatures talk I'm sure it will be done without being odd and I trust Jackson for doing just that.

I just think it would be odd if they cut out all the other talking creatures when we know Smaug will be talking.

I'll put my bet in that Smaug and trolls will speak. Birds will flutter in the ears of Bard (ala the moths to Gandalf). But no ponies serving lunch or talking spiders.

I just think it would be odd if they cut out all the other talking creatures when we know Smaug will be talking.

Having read the books and watched the movies more times than I can count for me its not an issue.

I'll put my bet in that Smaug and trolls will speak. Birds will flutter in the ears of Bard (ala the moths to Gandalf). But no ponies serving lunch or talking spiders.

Smaug will speak that is a guarantee. They have Benedict Cumberbatch voicing Smaug for the movie or movies. The Trolls very easily could talk which isn't a big deal but I doubt anything else really does much talking.

What I am looking forward to most is sitting down one weekend and watching DVDs of the Hobbit films and LOTR films in chronological order. That will be epic.
