Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

It's not 3 movies for "fun". It's been turned into 3 movies for $. I don't have any issue with it, but let's call it what it is. Keeping the cash cow alive as long as they can.

So you've seen the movie and are 100% sure of it's content eh? I had no idea you traveled in such lofty hollywood circles Mr. Fisto.

Of course these are made to make money and I plan on helping them but its going to be fun as hell as well.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

If they only wanted money they would release six 90 minute films. The idea of a three act story is pretty ancient and if they feel they have enough material to appropriately fill a trilogy, then I think it will work.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yeah, I'm glad it's 3 movies as well. Because once the credits roll at the end of the last movie that's it. That will be pretty much all we will see of Middle Earth on the big screen. I doubt that anything would ever be done with The Silmarillion with all the legal red tape, not to mention that it wouldn't be as recognizable or appealing to the casual fan.

I cant see why they cannot do a second age story ...or even one about earnor and stories of the Northern kingdom when the Witch king was a terror

You don't have to tell me. I would love something like that:yess: but I don't know if it would be too obscure to be marketable.

Anything in LOTR is marketable...They could even do a film about the Dwarves history in regards to Orc Dwarf war...having a narration in the beginning about Moria, then leading up to Smaugs takeover of Erebor...then start the film about Thror and Thrains life afterwards....have the film end with the capture of Thrain by the Necromancer....a kind of Hobbit prequel if you will....lots of story there....I wonder how much of that is in the Hobbit film considering it's running time

They don't have the rights to that kind of material. If its not in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, or in the Appendicies they cannot do it. Actually, I think there some items in the appendicies they can't do.

All that was in the Appendices which came out first before Silmarrion was even released ....who knows....It could be done if the price was right too...lol...5 -10 years from now a lot could happen

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I just don't understand why this needs to be three movies? :dunno

What I don't understand is why the Lord of the Rings was ONLY 3 movies?! It should have been 6!!!

:lecture :exactly: :goodpost:

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

While die hard fans would enjoy seeing a bunch of random battles and incidents from the appendices, there has to be a central narrative with a main character or two in order for it to work as a film. It can't be three hours of filling in the blanks and skipping over decades and centuries between major battles. Little flashbacks here and there that are relevant to the main story work, as long as they are all ultimately connected to the main plot of Frodo destroying the ring, etc. But you can't make an entire film with no central narrative and just interesting filler material that connects the dots. Again, fans would like it, but for mainstream success, it has to hang on a single overarching narrative in a film or else it needs to be adapted as an HBO series with multiple episodes giving you the freedom to explore different times, places and events.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Even if there wasn't the whole issue with the rights to the material etc... I think I would rather have everything end on a high note with The Hobbit. It was hard enough for Peter Jackson to come back as it is, and I don't want to have some hack possibly butcher the legacy he created. Like I said, I would love to see some of the history of Middle Earth tackled (some of my favorite reading is from the appendicies, Sil, Book of Lost Tales etc...) if done right. A big part of reason LOTR movies work is because of the passion PJ had and yeah I know he didn't do it out of charity. But if the director doesn't have the same knowledge and passion for the source material it ain't gonna work.

The thing is the Tolkien Estate owns the rights to the Sil and they do not like anything movie wise thats been done with Tolkiens work. So they're most likely never going to sell the rights. Even after Chris Tolkien dies I wouldn't count on anything.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Give me all you can give me! Three movies is great! Give me more even!

I will not ***** about goodness! :lecture
