Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Except the criticism on the length that i've read seems to suggest that this one is a lot more dragged out than any of the original films.

It'll probably be a great thing for the die hard Tolkien fans who'd love to see everything explored in-depth.

But might not be so good for the casual fans who loved the original but havn't read any of the books and just want to see another great set of films.
Yeah, that's how I feel about the Dark Knight Rises.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

In The Hobbit, Tolkien writes:

"Your grandfather Thror was killed, you remember, in the mines of Moria by Azog the Goblin."

"Curse his name, yes," said Thorin.

That takes about seven seconds to read. Guess what? When Jackson shows the flashback, it takes longer than that. And I think it's a great scene.

Same here, from the appendices:

It is said that Thorin's shield was cloven and he cast it away and he hewed off with his axe a branch of an oak and held it in his left hand to ward off the strokes of his foes, or to wield as a club. In this way he got his name.

Jackson is able to build a memorable scene or sequence out of a single sentence or paragraph from Tolkien. I mean, you have to expect that Jackson is going to expand things when Tolkien says nothing but, "The White Council meets." He turns four words into a nice long scene with some beloved characters. Thank goodness.

That's the thing. If Jackson did everything word for word The Hobbit would be one short movie with little development in any character other than Gandalf, Thorin, and Bilbo. What's being added is going to make this a better set of films.

I guess you have it all covered. :lol

Indeed! :rock

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I think that's a good approach. And I think you are really going to enjoy this movie, Josh!

I have a gut feeling I will like the 48. I just want to enjoy the story that I've enjoyed for over a decade and a film I've been waiting years to see. Outside of real world problems Middle-earth is something that means a lot to me as you well know. So I believe you that I am going to have so much fun tonight seeing this movie. :rock

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I just wish the theater I am seeing it in had Atmos. 3D HFR IMAX in and Atmos theater would be great.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

There's a vast difference between pace and story. Yeah, the story could be awesome, excellent even. But if not paced well, it can seem stretched and dull.

Jackson paced the LOTR trilogy excellently. The rule of three was in every single one. (beginning action, middle action, end action.)

I have a feeling this will be paced much like King Kong. Which is fine with me, I loved King Kong. But for more casual fans, and just regular movie goers it could be a problem and can result in lower scores from critics and viewers.

I think that if you are not a total 3D fanatic (and I am one of those), it's safer to not make 48fps your first viewing choice. That way you can just enjoy the film without having to process the new technology. Then check out the high frame rate later to see for yourself what all the fuss is about.

The screening I saw had Atmos audio on top of the IMAX HFR 3D and it was fantastic. Another major part of what made that the greatest presentation I've ever experienced in a theater.

The swooping 3D cinematography during the escape from Goblin Town was just a huge kick in the pants. That whole sequence starts with an entrance that made me gasp from the awesomeness, and then it just gets better. I think the last 45 minutes of the movie are incredible and worth the price of admission. From the Stone Giants to Goblin Town to Riddles in the Dark to Out of the Frying Pan, the movie is firing on all cylinders and is a visual marvel, and that's where the 3D really truly pays off.

I like 3D for things like The Avengers, Spidey, GI Joe, Pacific Rim, etc. I just don't know if Middle-earth is one of those places that needs it. I think the frame rate could be cool though especially in 2D. So I'm very curious about that but I just want to enjoy the story out of the gate.

Awesome Tom. I guess that is how I'll see/hear it on the 3rd viewing. :yess:

The thing is The Hobbit doesn't set itself up like that. The first 40 mins won't have a ton of "action" because its more of an exspoition type setup. You're going to get both songs in that time period and setting up the action that is to come once Bilbo leaves.

Oh yes I know. And that's my point. That's why some critics are saying its slow and padded. It just isn't the type of film that has it (beginning action) but may need it.

When I say action I don't mean epic battles etc. Think FOTR it didn't have much action in the beginning but it still had the wizard duel, Nazguls etc from the first few minutes.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Josh is right. This isn't Lord of the Rings. It doesn't have the urgency in the first act. It sets up an adventure that Bilbo isn't sure he wants any part of. Now, the audience wants the story to get moving as quickly as possible. But Bilbo is just the opposite, and you have to be a little patient with that. He wants the dwarves out of his house so he can go back to a simple and quiet life. It takes a little time for him to get on board, and once they leave it takes a bit longer for the journey to become eventful. Then things start to happen, but before long they arrive in Rivendell and you get more exposition. However, if anybody gets bored after they leave Rivendell, I don't know what to tell you.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Looks like it's gonna be Saturday afternoon for us. :impatient:

As far as I'm concerned Peter Jackson can cram as much info into these as he likes. I'm one of those people that wishes the LOTR extended editions were like seven hours each.:lol

I don't think any fans of LOTR or especially the Source material need to worry about conflicting reviews - I know I'm sure as hell not.:yess:

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Got tickets to a regular 2D showing at noon on Sunday. First time the wife and I will be out alone since the baby was born 5 months ago. :yess: First time my parents will be watching the baby. :panic:
