Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

You get a couple flashback scenes showing the loss of the mountain and then the battle outside Moria. You also get Radagast uncovering evil in the forest. You definitely don't have to wait an hour before you get some action and epic PJ/Tolkien imagery. But Bilbo himself doesn't get involved in that stuff during the first half of the movie.

Plus remember...this film is only 1/3 of the story...I just bet the other 2 films wont have this (supposedly rumored to be slow) intro

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

For me it is a Middle Earth Story...put yourself in the moment.related to the characters and story and enjoy...screw all the critics, film format, pacing and comparing to LOTR...

Do you see Smaug in any of the flashbacks?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'd think PJ is more focused on making a decent movie than how many asses are in the seats. (hell this is a LOTR prequel). The studio, however might be.

They changed loads in the Harry Potter flicks, but people still saw them and they crushed records.

I think he is but I know that Jackson is concerned with what fans of Tolkien actually think of the movies. He's as respectful to the material as any director and why its not like the HP stuff where its vastly different than the books.

PS: Its not a LOTR prequel. :lecture

You know what I mean. :lol

I was referring to the general audience. They'll look at this as a LOTR prequel, and compare it to the LOTR trilogy.

Got tickets to a regular 2D showing at noon on Sunday. First time the wife and I will be out alone since the baby was born 5 months ago. :yess: First time my parents will be watching the baby. :panic:

Now you two behave yourselves! :monkey3

They kind of treat it like Gollum in Fellowship. Just a little tease, but they are saving the big reveal for the next movie. You get to see Smaug's attack on Erebor without really seeing much of him. It's mostly fire and smoke and shadow.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I've seen it that many times that I don't need to watch the beginning. The middle act on the island is without doubt the best part of the film.

Jack Black is the weirdest casting ever in it, he should have had a rock off with kong at the end:lol

Yes, I do. Its being marketed as such/

I think that's part of the main reason why some critics aren't liking it and why some causal fans won't either. They're going to expect LOTR redo and that just isn't The Hobbit. I expect these critics to have a bit more of a clue before seeing a movie.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

My expectations for this are pretty low. But I have my tickets for Friday.

Ultra screen, HFR, 3D.

Actually, I fear it will be too much of a LOTR prequel. From the previews, it looks like we will have constant reminders that the stories and characters are related. I was not pleased to see Gollum arguing to himself. That is expanded upon in the LOTR from a very specific scene in the book where he debates with himself while Frodo sleeps. It's a product of his mixed feelings about the ring when in the hands of one who would destroy it.

To give him that characteristic in the Hobbit just seems like an over-eager attempt to tie it together with LOTR while capitalizing on something that the kiddies loved in the LOTR movies.

I really hope they don't stick Gollum into all three Hobbit movies with his multiple personality schtick. He really shouldn't be in it at all after this film.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Also, I think it's a mistake to make this three movies. Taking a kids book and stretching it out that far is gonna make it seem bloated. I pretty much lost all excitement for the movie when I heard they were doing that.

Shame. But maybe my low expectations will mean I enjoy it even more.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I hope you do Maglor :lecture

I always thought the first film would feel a bit like FOTR re-visited - Gandalf goes to The Shire to recruit a Hobbit for a big adventure, and they then take the same route to Rivendell and the Misty Mountains.

If anyone's to blame, it's Tolkien :rotfl

...just immerse yourself in Middle Earth and forget about all else
