Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Goto the Midnight showing alone? Or wait to go with GF and kid tomorrow? Hmmmmmm!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'd go alone first. Enjoy the atmosphere of the midnight.

And then go again.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Or take kid out of school tomorrow and make her come with at midnight!

LOL.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Actually, I fear it will be too much of a LOTR prequel. From the previews, it looks like we will have constant reminders that the stories and characters are related. I was not pleased to see Gollum arguing to himself. That is expanded upon in the LOTR from a very specific scene in the book where he debates with himself while Frodo sleeps. It's a product of his mixed feelings about the ring when in the hands of one who would destroy it.

To give him that characteristic in the Hobbit just seems like an over-eager attempt to tie it together with LOTR while capitalizing on something that the kiddies loved in the LOTR movies.

I really hope they don't stick Gollum into all three Hobbit movies with his multiple personality schtick. He really shouldn't be in it at all after this film.

It's somewhat of a Catch-22 with Gollum. If PJ didn't come out with LOTR, then the audience would not be aware of his conflicted personality. However, given the audience's familiarity with Gollum already, it would make sense to maintain that familiarity, but not stray too far away from his character in The Hobbit. The fact that people who've already watched the movie mostly praise the Riddles in the Dark portion as one of the best movie moments indicates Gollum's representation in The Hobbit is the least to worry about.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I hope you do Maglor :lecture

I always thought the first film would feel a bit like FOTR re-visited - Gandalf goes to The Shire to recruit a Hobbit for a big adventure, and they then take the same route to Rivendell and the Misty Mountains.

If anyone's to blame, it's Tolkien :rotfl

I love the Hobbit (the book). And I agree that the beginning of Fellowship (book and movie) have a similar feel to the Hobbit. Not sure what that has to o with my apprehensions about the movie though. :dunno

Just got my HFR tickets. :D

We shall see....:lol

:lol Indeed. I expect to hate that as well.

Yeah, it's just an example. I just hope that PJ hasn't turned something awesome into a money-making carnival ride.

I'm sure the movie will be fine. I'm just going to judge the hell out of the hFR. :D

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Those that have already gotten a chance to see this in the Higher Frame Rate, is it really like a "Soap Opera" time movement? Like how the setting is on the HD TV's with the 120hz set to max? Thats kinda the way some people have been discribing it. I hope not, cause I find that setting very distracting.

Exactly what I have expected from the moment the 48fps was announced.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

You will. No doubt about it. It's different. And different will take you out of the film.

Some like it, some don't. Some need a few minutes to get used to it then enjoy it. You'd have to see it for yourself.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Anyone who watches soap operas knows that they are overlit. I don't think this will be.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Thats what worries me. My wife and I are going to the 3D version tomorrow, but we both hate that setting on the TV so Im afraid that we will be too distracted to actually enjoy the movie.

A lot of people find it distracting and need some time to get used to it. I didn't need to adjust at all and I thought it looked great.

Some people have asked if it looked like a soap opera. I have never in my life watched a soap opera, so I can't comment. But it definitely looked different than anything I'd ever seen on a movie screen. To my eyes, it looked better. But most reactions I've seen have been more on the negative side. Not sure why my experience was so different.

Only reason I'm seeing it that way is that I'm a believer in "directors intent". I don't like 3D either, but gonna get the full deal tomorrow, for better or for worse.

Not worried about lighting. It's all about how motion is perceived.

It wont be as smooth as a soap opera, but it will look like BBC television.

You don't need to watch soap operas to know what video (instead of film) looks like. Pretty much any live TV uses it (talk shows, sports, news, etc.)
