Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I have to say that I am slightly saddened that 10 years after LOTR, that Hobbit will not even match the U.S. Box Office of Fellowship, the lowest grossing film of the LOTR trilogy. Given inflation and the added take from 3D, I would have thought it would have at least out grossed 2 of the 3 LOTR films in the U.S.

It's not so much the box office take that bothers me, just that it is an indication that fewer people are interested in Middle Earth than they were 10 years ago.

Or an indication that the economy is poorer than 10 years ago.

Historically movies have performed better during bad economic times, given that (even though overpriced) going to the movies is far more affordable family entertainment than most other choices. The attendance for Gone With The Wind will probably never be seen again. In the poor economy of 2012, we saw 3 movies (4 when Hobbit passes it) break the billion $ mark, and also 3 in 2011.

I am sure home theaters eat into that profit, but clearly people are still going to the movies in droves.

To me, the Hobbit failing to break $300 million in the U.S. is a clear sign that the world of Middle Earth just isnt as appealing as it was to the average film goer. As long as I get to see the movies, that is fine, I guess, and I should just be happy these films got made at all.

Besides, it's not like they were going to adapt The Silmarillion if this movie did unexpectedly huge business.

I don't think it's because Middle Earth isn't appealing. Too many people these days follow websites like Rotten Tomatoes and listen to critics these days and follow thier opinions.

It could be that people are listening to those more as they are using them to be more selective in which movie they spend their money on. Just part of being frugal I think.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe it is not doing as well as LOTR because it is not as good as LOTR was?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I'm not exactly sure why some people are hung up on what movies bring in at the Box Office.:dunno All that really matters is if you like it or not.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

No. FOTR didn't "do as well" as TTT and it was the superior film.

Well then, I've helped you figure it out.:)

And as far as FOTR being a better movie than TTT, you are lucky that it is not illegal to be dead wrong. You'd get the chair.:lol

It is for some I have no doubts about that at all. I would argue that it isn't for everyone though. Its as good at being The Hobbit as those films were as being their representative from The Lord of the Rings. IMO of course.

Interesting. Not a common opinion but I'm very curious. What makes TTT the better film in your mind?

That's a tough one but I gotta say FOTR FTW.:yess: The Battle of Helms Deep brings it pretty damn close though.
