Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Historically movies have performed better during bad economic times, given that (even though overpriced) going to the movies is far more affordable family entertainment than most other choices. The attendance for Gone With The Wind will probably never be seen again. In the poor economy of 2012, we saw 3 movies (4 when Hobbit passes it) break the billion $ mark, and also 3 in 2011.

I am sure home theaters eat into that profit, but clearly people are still going to the movies in droves.

To me, the Hobbit failing to break $300 million in the U.S. is a clear sign that the world of Middle Earth just isnt as appealing as it was to the average film goer. As long as I get to see the movies, that is fine, I guess, and I should just be happy these films got made at all.

Besides, it's not like they were going to adapt The Silmarillion if this movie did unexpectedly huge business.

Wait till folks see it on DVD...They might go to the movies to see parts 2 and 3...It was kinda like that for LOTR for some...plus I could see PJ listening to the reviews and critiques of The Hobbit and tweak the 2nd and 3rd film maybe towards being liked more...plus the next two films will not I think have the slower beginning like the first film had which (while not for me) was a problem and mood killer for some...that's my take...this film will make 1.1 Billion Worldwide total which basically paid for all 3 films...The next 2 films is profit gravy!....They should make a Billion each easily...maybe even 1.25 to 1.5 billion if they get better reviews...JMHO of course

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I agee I think the next two films will be quicker than the first simply because we're past the intro of all the main players. It will be more like The Lord of the Rings where characters are introduced.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Do we want to rename this thread The Hobbit: Trilogy or do we want to have a thread for each film?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Normally sequels get their own threads so I'd be inclined to say rename this one AUJ and make a new one for Desolation.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Interesting. Not a common opinion but I'm very curious. What makes TTT the better film in your mind?

FOTR was great for character developement and the slow part of the story.

But TTT was a much more exciting and grandiose film.

ROTK should have been even better but it was barely noticeably less so than TTT.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I'm not exactly sure why some people are hung up on what movies bring in at the Box Office.:dunno All that really matters is if you like it or not.

It's just something to talk about, and some seem to think that since it should've done better than LotR because it was 3D.

If it were my movie, I'd be damn proud it's taking in the money that it is.

Consider this:

Hobbit cost $250 million plus
Multiple expensive ticket prices to see it- 3d and Imax 3d

It may just barely crack $300 million at box office

You figure out the level of success. Yes it was but what expectations did it have??

See numbers of Avengers and TDKR to compare it to....

You can't really compare it to those movies since it's nothing like it and it's only part one of three.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Getting closer to the billion mark:

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic:$289,530,240 31.4%
+ Foreign:$632,200,000 68.6%

= Worldwide:$921,730,240

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Should get there once it opens in china. My guess is probably another few weeks here in the US as well.

My local Cinema has 20 screens, when I saw it this past weekend it was showing only 4 times, twice in 3D and twice in non 3D, this theater even had it in HFR when it first came out. I would be very surprised to see it still in theaters in 3 weeks. I went during the only evening showing, and there were only 4 other people in the theater. It may stick around for another week at most in my area.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

It's still showing in 2300 theaters according to BO Mojo. It's only in its seventh week. I think they will at least let it get to 10 weeks before it leaves theaters.

TDKR made 1.081 billion and The Hobbit is on track to meet that. Not sure what point you're trying to make.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*
