Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

To butt in after all of that...very awesome clip. Thanks Dino.

And sure he looks frail I guess, but he was able to walk out there, he'll be able to walk in The Hobbit if he wants to.

Also, does anyone know if there are rights out there for Tolkien's other works like The Silmarillion? I'd love it if we could continue after the two Hobbit films and tell excerpt stories from that, those stories were always more Epic and Fantastical to me, something a little different to see brought to life if it was done with the same professionalism that the LOTR were.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Lee's realistically probably only got a few years left. I would not be surprised if he is not in the Hobbit, due to just being frail. (that video speaks volumes)

/salute

I've been praying for a Berin and Luthien movie for years.

The Tale of Years is a good place to start :lecture

Plus she does it in The Battle For Middle Earth 2 ;) :D

Not as long as Christopher Tolkien is alive. He is very much opposed to selling rights to any of his fathers works. The rights to the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings were sold long ago before it was in his control.

Ah right, I was trying to sort how we were getting a two part Hobbit movie with the Dol Guldur and White Council stuff, but that there was nothing for any of the other tales.

So I guess they can make anything from the Appendices? I haven't read them in awhile, so I really don't know what could be pulled from there.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Children of Hurin would make a great movie.

I would love that, but I cant see it happening as it's too crushingly depressing for the masses.

I still think Berin and Luthien movie would be the best option for Hollywood. Not only does it have a great loves story, but it has a happy ending and tons of action. They could do a little prologue at the beginning giving the history of the Silmarills like they did with the ring at the beginning of LOTR, and then tell the story of how they steal a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown.

Here's a brief discussion about it:

I’m already imagining just how mind blowing some of the scenes like Sauron striving with Felagund in the contest of the songs of power, Huan vs. Wolf-Sauron, and Beren and Luthien in disguise going into the pits of Angband, and getting a Silmaril from Morgoth’s crown could be. Dare to dream!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

All the incest and suicide in Children of Hurin is just too much for a big budget Fantasy Blockbuster.

I absolutely loved the book, but we wont be seeing it on film.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

:lol

If the movies stay faithful to the source materiel, the incest part shouldn't affect the movie goers experience. But as it stands right now, we wont see either tales of Tolkien for a long time.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm just saying that it's a crushing epic tragedy, without a glimmer of hope in it. It feels almost Shakespearian, or maybe like the old Greek tragedies. I honestly just think it's too devastatingly dark for a big budget movie. A big movie (with tons of expensive special effects) like that needs to pull in huge amounts of movie goers to make money.

If you could take out Glaurung and do it like a small indi film, the artsy types (like me) would love it. But of course you can't take out the dragon because it is he that causes the human tragedy through his lies.

I maintain that Beren and Luthien is the most mainstream-ready story in the Silmarillion.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I have the Children of Hurin just haven't made myself read it yet. Not sure why. Might go ahead and jump on that once I finish reading LOTR again.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

:horror :thud:

Read it! :lecture

It is such a tremendous gift that Christopher has given us in compiling a complete story of his father's like that. I mean it's like Tolkien came back from the grave to give us another piece of official canon to add to his legendarium.

I know the same story is told in the Silmarillion, but it's a shorthand version. To have this story fleshed out, again, is such a huuuuge gift. I couldn't buy/read it fast enough!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

In fairness, the complete Children of Hurin story was published in The Unfinished Tales. I know the newly released Children of Hurin missed some plot lines. I forget the reason why CT did that though.

For you Mags I will read it when I'm done. I've read some of the Sil. It just didn't grab me so I kind of jumped around. I do plan someday to read it from cover to cover.

I have the UT in my collection of books. Didn't realize that was in it though.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

UT has a ton of extra info, especially on Numenor, Tuor,Turin, the Wizards and even Galadriel and Celeborn.

As for the Silmarillion, try getting past the creation of Arda section. Once you come to the forging of the Silmaril and flight of the Noldor, it's becomes even more amazing than the Hobbit or the LOTR.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Thankfully Maglor's opinion has no bearing but I am pretty sure anything with Tolkien's name on it would have a pretty good chance of selling as well one other franchise with incest and downer endings... um Star Wars.
