Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

UT has a ton of extra info, especially on Numenor, Tuor,Turin, the Wizards and even Galadriel and Celeborn.

As for the Silmarillion, try getting past the creation of Arda section. Once you come to the forging of the Silmaril and flight of the Noldor, it's becomes even more amazing than the Hobbit or the LOTR.

Ah cool. Yeah, the UT is another one I really need to read from cover to cover.

After reading the Children of Hurin I'll try to jump on the Sil and get that read from cover to cover finally.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

In fairness, the complete Children of Hurin story was published in The Unfinished Tales. I know the newly released Children of Hurin missed some plot lines. I forget the reason why CT did that though.

Will have to check on that. I have UT, but I haven't read it cover to cover. I have used it more as reference material. I do have my doubts that all the meat that is in the Book The Children of Hurin can be found in UT. As far as why TCOH would have 'missing plot lines': unlike Unfinished Tails and the 12 volumes of The History of Middle-earth this is canon. It will not include anything that might conflict with what is found in The Silmarillion, which is also canon. All those other books are almost like fan fiction. Yes I know that they were written by Tolkien, but they are just notes. They are interesting if you want to see how Tolkien's genius worked but not if you want to get straight what "really happened" in Tolkien's legendarium.

For you Mags I will read it when I'm done. I've read some of the Sil. It just didn't grab me so I kind of jumped around. I do plan someday to read it from cover to cover.

I understand how you feel about The Silmarillion as it reads almost like a text book. Not so with Children of Hurin. It is a novel and it reads like one. It uses a "higher" form of English, but it feels a lot like LOTR.

As long as you are not waiting for the kind of ending LOTR gave you, you will enjoy it. You have my word. :)

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

:lol

Exactly. If the movies are done right, they would get more acclaim than the LOTR trilogy. Tolkien always preferred them anyways.

They would have to be pretty special to top what people feel about LOTR. Even The Hobbit has a small up hill battle fighting against that. Plus I doubt Jackson ever goes back to ME after this and outside of GDT, Spielberg there are few I trust with everything MEish.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Thankfully Maglor's opinion has no bearing but I am pretty sure anything with Tolkien's name on it would have a pretty good chance of selling as well one other franchise with incest and downer endings... um Star Wars.

Have you read The Children of Hurin?

Yeah, I've been told it doesn't quite hit the same notes as LOTR which is fine. I love Tolkiens works and how he writes things so I'm cool with it not being the same.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Just a heads up: if you think the Silmarillion is a hard read, then you will find the UT impossible to read because it's almost as bad as the HoME. Way too many notes and references but all of it adds so much to Tolkien's tale.

As for the missing plot lines, I know the Children of Hurin is canon, but the missing plot lines didn't really conflict with Tolkien's Legandarium. CT should have kept them in the book. I thought they were an essential part to the overall plot.

Edit: Back in the first age, Middle Earth was known as Beleriand, the region west of the Blue Mountains. ;)

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I just don't see a fair comparison between Star Wars and COH. And considering that you've read COH, I'm surprised you'd make it.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

What surprised you about it? I guess I should have put a wink ";)" after it. I thought it was pretty obvious I was half-joking (about the incest part). Essentially you have a drama which on it's own is quite bleak. But within context of LotR it's not without hope. Revenge of the Sith, on it's own, is quite bleak. The hero kills children to save his own wife and baby and in doing so kills his wife and assumes he has killed his baby. But when considered with the entire story arch of the saga it is a bit more palatable.

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying CoH would be a great PG-13 family movie. It would be R rated and as such I would assume it would attract a more sophisticated audience who wouldn't need a story resolution with bright rainbows, white horses, and cheering.

Yeah, I remember reading some of the UT and it was different. I agree though when I read it all I expect it will add to what I love already.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I got the Children of Hurin hardcover last year when it came out, and just never got to it. It wasn't really a priority as I had read it in The Silmarillon or Unfinished Tales, also, it's bleak. It is hard to believe that the entire story was in Unfinished Tales though, the hardcover is huge.

I also never really thought about what's Canon and not with Middle-Earth. I've only additionally read The Silmarillon and Unfinished Tales and thought that was it. Is there any of the Christopher Tolkien books that are worth looking into?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

The only other works of J.R.R. Tolkien compiled by Christopher are in the History of Middle Earth. They are very extensive but are pretty much the full-extent of Tolkien legendarium.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

You win for most apropo smiley use ever. :winner

Thank you. :lol

I've always considered the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings good novels, the Silmarillion a history textbook and the the Unfinished Tales technical journals.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

This appies to me too :lol

I've had the book for ages, just not got round to reading it.
Having said that if what Mags says about the story is true (incest and suicide) then I'm glad I didn't and now I won't.
x :peace
