Predator 1 is not an example of a movie living off nostalgia fumes it is the real deal.

Very few movies are action/sci-fi/horror masterpieces and Predator is one of them.

Is it, though? When it came out, most people treated it like a Rambo vs. Aliens mash-up, albeit a fun one. Even today, it's not discussed by critics or casuals as anything more than a pulpy '80s actioner. The only folks putting it on a pedestal are die-hard Predator heads and nostalgic Gen X-ers. You hear anyone mention it in a film course with that kind of reverence and I'll sign right up.

Alien, sure. Terminator 2, sure (by virtue of its VFX achievements). But Predator? This stuff isn't masterful, it's just cool. I say this as a massive fan.

I agree, well written humor is not subject to a time in history, what I was getting at is that I feel like the times have an effect on writers. I discuss with my coworker all the time how comedy movies for the past 10 years or so just seem lacking, like people forgot how to be funny, like comedies likes of Dumb and Dumber that end up quoted all the time and such, I’ve laughed at movies but I feel like I get more humor from Marvel movies now than movies actually meant to be comedies.

I feel like some of the attempts at humor here are trying to be like the one offs of the 80s, but the problem is, they’re trying, it feels like they’re trying and not natural and that’s usually where humor fails.

Ah okay. That I agree with then. That was an aspect of what I was saying earlier. The humor of today doesn't feel organic. It's extremely forced. They TELL you it's funny instead of it happening organically. In the past a guy twists his ankle makes a funny noise and face and the scene breaths allowing you to take it in. These days...a character falls and they start to explain the scene "oh ow ive twisted my ankle in such a way that it feels so painful. its like a *insert silly metaphor*" there's no breathing, there's no imagination. The script is telling us how funny it is.

Rap sucks. I want it to die. Sooner the better.

:lol :lol :lol

I don't think it's going anywhere. Not even SJW's go after rap.

I don't think people give predator enough credit actually. It really is a movie that exists within it's own dynamic. It has good pacing, a simple but well developed plot. Characters with easily understood motivations as well as exceptional character development. The top 3 characters don't end the movie the way they began. Dutch is not the same person at the end of the film. That is character development. You don't see that in a lot of the 80's sci-fi schlop that people love to compare Predator to.

I've introduced Predator to numerous acquaintances over the years who never grew up with it. 9 times out of 10 they come away enjoying the hell out of it. It's actually had more of a success rate than Star Wars for me :lol

It's always fun to see this dynamic when a new entry in a franchise comes out. One side defends the old and craps on the new. One side craps on the old and defends the new. It's like obscene poetry.

The rap today sucks. It's telling when the best person in the game right now is some rainbow bright looking dude. his songs are cool at parties tho.

Have we seen even one scene where this big predator isn't completely CGI?
I expected the movie to suck and was kind of ok with that but the cgi is the thing that has surprised me most. Practical effects has always been one of the best thing about Predator.

Just like any other masterpiece Predator is a result of all the lightning parts coming together in a bottle never to be duplicated ever again.

The difficult shooting location, an alien creature having no business looking and moving that good in such close up shots that it’s absolutely absurd that it was created in the 80’s before cgi, a charismatic womanizing muscle head super star, Apollo freaking Creed, one liners for the ages, camouflage effects perfectly married with the jungle setting, central america politics of the era (even though filmed in mexico), oscar worthy character interactions, love and celebration of USA military power, shock of witnessing said USA military power being so easily dismantled in the presence of a peasant female, man connecting with nature relying on primitive weapons, macho man vs macho alien show down.

That list can go on and on and when all those parts came together it transformed into a triple AAA B movie.

Aliens is another one as is Terminator 1 nothing can touch those 3 when it comes to the marriage of Action/Sci-fi/Horror not even The Thing because that’s not an action movie and T2 is no horror movie.

The beauty of it all is that the intricate layers involved with Predator 1 are woven so tightly together that it all seems very simple and accessible for everyone to follow but make no mistake about it that movie has layers as deep as a jungle.

Even the cigar had purpose.

I ain't got time to bleed!

The original Predator commits it's own sins...but the new film has already committed more sins with just a few trailers :lol

I can't wait to see the Pred-Puppers with their little dreadlocks in action :rotfl

This is what I saw when you came here with the smackdown

Said by the Pumpkinhead hater. :lol

But I love Predator 1; it's always good fun.

Though the sequels were all mediocre (Predator 2) to awful (AvPR) IMO. I don't think this one is even going to be worth watching via a bootleg copy.

That's a good way of looking at it. As much as I love the original film for what it is, it's not a 10/10 for me and when looking at it with a critical eye, it's more like an 8.5/10 at best or maybe even a 7.5/10. Would definitely put Alien ahead of it, personally.

You of all people are going to critique my taste in movies jye? Go watch Transformers and Batman v. Superman again. :lol

Rap sucks. I want it to die. Sooner the better.

Good or bad it just alienates me.
I'm into heavy metal, I can understand that it can alienate people too so I'm not surprised by the lack of presence in modern movie soundtracks, It's best to either go middle of the road music wise or orchestrations.
If "The Predator" has the same kind of music as it's trailer then it's more reason to not see this.

Even worse when it's the "everyone wants to be funny too" and all the actors are trying their damnedest to outdo one another and no one want's to be the straight man. (Ghostbusters 2016, Deadpool 2)

I think in Predator, correct me if I'm wrong, but once the Predator started killing people all jokes stopped. No - there was one joke ''you think you coulda found something bigger?'' at which I think Billy laughs - which I do find a little weird in the context of the moment. And it actually sounds like Jesse Ventura - but he's dead by that time so it can only be Billy, maybe Dillon.

Watch jye try to trigger Chakor now by saying Pirates 1 is the only good one or something and throw Grace in there as well while you're at it. :lol

Guh...

I can't stand that super fake looking CGI blood and gore.

Practical effects look so much better 99% of the time.

Practical looks great but you mess up once and the actors have to be recleaned, new clothes, new makeup, new wig, set has to be cleaned so on an so forth.

Yeah digital totally is much easier to deal with.

A. I agree with you I prefer practical blood not excuses

B. Go ahead and finance a movie with your own money watch how quickly your “**** easy” changes to “hell no we’re not wasting money on practical gore, cgi that crap!” lol

Transformers and BvS > POTC 3,4, and 5

Of course that is not saying much :)

I only give POTC 2 credit for the great villain and CGI effects... Unfortunately some of my original enjoyment of the film is impacted by the god awful 3rd instalment
