I would go heavier and lower to 4-6 reps
Barbell and dbell shrugs
You could use a smith machine too

I use a smith machine now.

I start at two plates each side and go up to 4 plates each side facing out. I then drop plates and face in. 10 reps.

Should i try and stay high and only do 4 to six reps?

Traps usually respond best to higher reps. Don't forget to squeeze the traps at the top of each rep. Try to hold for a second while squeezing the traps. And drop that Smith machine :)

And if you have plateaud then eat more carbs before working out or sip on a shake while working out.

Go heavy enough to barely get those reps. Use straps to aid if needed.
Mix it up a bit with different pauses and pace.
Like Tornado says carbs may help as will some sorta of pre workout aid.
A combo of those things will help.
Are you recording weight so you know how much you are doing or just trying to remember? Try doing legs the day before back/traps, you will be at your highest in growth hormone released.

Bingo. Some people do legs twice a week just to increase GH. Squats on Monday and Deadlifts on Thursday. Helps you grow Tuesday and Friday.

I squat 2-3 times a week and deadlift at least once a week. I do it because it is right. You guys looking for overly scientific explanations are needlessly overcomplicating everything.

Traps are easy to train. Upright Rows, Shrugs and they get a good workout from Deadlifts too. Big deadlifters have big traps.

If you aren't deadlifting and squatting, then don't ask why you are not getting bigger and/or stronger.

THE SQUAT

Down this road, in a gym far away,
a young man was heard to say,
"no matter what i do, my legs won't grow"
he tried leg extensions, leg curls, and leg presses , too
trying to cheat, these sissy workouts he'd do.

from the corner of the gym where the big men train,
through a cloud of chalk and the midst of pain
where the noise is made with big forty fives,
a deep voice bellowed as he wrapped his knees.
a very big man with legs like trees.

laughing as he snatched another plate from the stack
chalking his hands and monstrous back,
said, "boy, stop lying and don't say you've forgotten,
the trouble with you is you ain't been SQUATTIN'. "

Sometimes you gotta explain how and why things happen. #broscience

Wow about that P90X article. I am a big fan of P90X and I've gotten fantastic results from the workouts. When I first started to read the article, I thought it would have been from pylometrics. I barely made it through on my first time :lol

I did P90X religiously for a while, but was already doing a good workout routine so I was in no way out of shape. I would never advise anyone to just start doing the maximum number or exercises at once but to do what they can and stop if you need to. Taking an extra break is not a bad idea.

Since I have done the routine enough I have incorporated some of the exercise techniques I learned in the videos to my gym workouts. So far they have been working fine.

It is the normal saying, and applies here: "don't run before you can walk".
