In this case, the terms were just not there. It actually said "any in stock item." No mention of gift cards or other BS.
I think it is a way for them to get as much as they can for each item. Like I said, I ordered a Jaws maquette about 12 days before the con. It was 175 + 45 shipping. I used an NYCC gift card and that brought it back down to $180. Literally a couple days after it arrives at my house, they drop the price to $150 plus $2 shipping. I emailed asking if they would be able to adjust the purchase price to reflect the $150 and give me a refund (like how most stores have price match policies). They said they would email me back with an answer later in the week. They later emailed me back saying they couldn't do it because I used a gift card. That's nonsense because even though I used the gc, I still paid $30 more.
And believe me, I could care less about the $30. However, I have almost 4k in preorders on their site. I would they they would also want to care less about giving a good customer back $30 when they change the price within a week of shipping.
It's all about full profit son, even though you had so much pre-ordered, I bet a majority of those are exclusives and have a ga-gillion behind ya in waitlist. As sad as it is, they know they'll get their money one way or the other, too much of demand for them to break their own back.... it's business! Not the best business but business...
