Great season finale. Tense, suspenseful and full of zombies and it has set it up well for Season 3. I thought the opening sequence of the zombie herd traveling from Atlanta to the farm was a little odd. I wonder if there is some significance there?
We see that the helicopter causes them to start traveling and is most likely the same helicopter that Rick saw in the series premiere. I am guessing their attention is initially drawn to it because of the sound, but what would prompt them to keep following it for countless days and miles until they got to the farm? We don't know much about the Walkers so the following is pure speculation on my part and is something that will keep the Walking Dead part of my brain occupied until S3 starts in the fall.
First of all, who is in the helicopter? I am guessing that is it government or military based people. It is not unreasonable to think that a good portion of governmental and military personnel (especially high ranking) are also surviving the zombie apocalypse somewhere. With all the disaster protocols and fail safes in place, most high ranking officials are whisked away to undisclosed, safehouses/bunkers as soon as the sh!-t starts hitting the fan. I'm wondering if the government/military inadvertently caused the zombie apocalypse while experimenting on some new type of bio-weapon - which might be the pre-cursor to the virus. For everyone to be infected with it, it has to be readily prevalent either in the air or the water supply. I'm guessing it is airborne as that makes the most sense and explains how it is a world wide epidemic and not isolated to certain geographical areas. Now that the virus is out of control, "they" - meaning government/military people have been observing the Walkers via the helicopter(s) in an effort to understand them so that they can control them. Could the helicopter have been influencing the Walkers behavior at all? If so, I think it would have to be either sound based (beyond the frequency range humans can hear) or smell based (some type of pheromone?). Could the helicopter have been doing something like this to test out how effective this control mechanism would be with the goal being to clear out Atlanta? Or was the helicopter purposely nudging the herd towards the farm to wipeout any survivors? However, I'm not too convinced about this sinister aspect of my theory yet.
Obviously this theory is still a work in progress but I can't help but try and look at the bigger picture here. The helicopter could be as simple as the helicopter crash in the comic, but to me it seemed they were purposely planting a link between the helicopter and the Walkers migration.
