Is the comic one of those books that has all sorts of off-shoots and side collections?
I was planning on picking up Compendium 1, then moving on to the books (since it looks like Compendium 2 isn't out yet). But then it appears that "Rise of the Governor" is a separate book / storyline altogether?
Issue 12 of what are they on now 95? This show has some real potential life in it.
You don't need the side books to enjoy the main story. The Compendum is fine. Honestly, I didn't care much for finding out the Governor's origin anyway.

Yup!
What has she openly admitted to herself so far? She confessed to Shane that she was deeply moved and grateful that he saved her and Carl, to the point that she was able to forgive him everything (standing by the windmill). But, what was her reaction to him when Rick turned up alive? It took her how many episodes to own up?
Her first instinct is clearly not admission of culpability. The affair was all Shane's fault; Shane's death was all Rick's fault.
I also don't think she's consciously manipulating anyone. She just doesn't know what the ____ she's doing or thinking at any given moment.
That's what the reviews seemed to say... enjoyable enough, but unnecessary.
But this is the only thing I hate about only reading collections - getting lost on the side stuff. So for now, I'll just stay on the main path.

I would actually like to see more of the core group's lives before the walkers.
Comic book Issue 13 marks the beginning of the season 3 story arc.
Issue 12 covers the groups departure from Herschel's farm (albeit for a very different reason) so you would be spoiler free reading up to issue 12.
As an aside, there is enough storyline to cover 10 seasons easily. But the only problem is that the real life actors would be aging too fast for the comic storyline since Kirkman has stated that he does not like jumping forward in time too much. Maybe a time jump of a few days and weeks, but certainly not months and years.
Before the zombie apocalypse she admits to not wanting to be married to Rick anymore and isn't even sure if she still loves him. Post apocalypse, she pursued Shane and things just "happened" per her admission to Rick at the fence which was backed up by Shane's statements to Rick when they stopped at the 4-way. She tells Shane to stay away from Carl and don't talk to him, then tells him not to brush off Carl. She then tells him to go, and then tells him to stay. She confirms that Rick killed the living to protect his family and then tells him Shane is a danger (basically telling Rick to kill Shane). Then tells Shane she's sorry for causing all the mess. Meanwhile, because Andrea is adapting to the world, she tries to cause tension between Andrea and Maggie. She can't be bothered to watch her kid at all which led to him being in several dangerous situations, getting Dale killed and even killing the Shane walker which she's pissed at Rick for. She also calls Daryl selfish for not running on her errand despite the fact that Daryl took an arrow AND a bullet looking for a little girl that wasn't even his. She drives a car right into a zombie and then gets bent when Shane lies to save her life. Did I miss anything?
Dude, she gotta go. Or the writers need to start writing the character better. IMHO, she's more annoying than Carl.

Now waiting to see if devil takes the bait.
I dislike Lori, but I don't want her to die... She's important in her own "special" way.
All that "chaperoning" you did for the SpecEd field trips suddenly makes sense now.
You give her too much credit.
She is simply a two timing adulterous womyn who wanted to stick her hands in both honey pots but is pissed off that she can't anymore cuz one of them is now dead.
She is a horny one I tell you. Blame it on the pregnancy hormones.
