Comes to mind to me at least. Since they are veering from the comics here, I'm in the dark as much as anyone that hasn't read the books. After the Governor and Woodbury, I'd have to think they'd be a little doubtful of any utopia presented before them now, no matter how desperate they are for a new home.

Doubt he'd ever permanently ditch the Python, but he has used used more practical weapons in the past.

Carl was just borrowing it since he emptied his gun while telling all the zombies he won. So Rick's gun was the only one they had bullets for and since Rick was going to take a nap, he didn't think he needed it and Carl might. I don't know if he gave it back after Rick ran out of the house, so it is possible Carl might be hanging on to it, but I would think Rick would give Carl the semi automatic pistol since Rick is more experience with the Python than Carl probably is.
They've just made it his signature weapon all these years so its a little strange for him to not be holding it in a promo pic.What?

Not meant as a putdown to AMC or the show, but I think HBO has too much artistic integrity to do something like that to GoT. I can't see something like that happening.
it might happen, But if they cannot show the zombies up close, the zombie smashing or the zombies feeding, then whats the point?
